It is very unfortunate the negative press The Playboy Club on NBC (channel 12 in Phoenix) has faced since the network has announced they were picking up the show. Since the series premiere the show has struggled in ratings despite the advertising campaign that was focused on raising interest. The second episode brought in less than 4 million viewers and had advertisers pulling out for the time slot thanks to another campaign from the PTC (Parents Television Council) which opposite focus.
According to the Hollywood Reporter the PTC’s president Tim Winter had this to say:
What has been clear to everyone outside of NBC must now be clear even to those inside NBC: The Playboy Club is a commercial disaster and must be removed from the airwaves. We call for the network to cancel this degrading and sexualizing program immediately.
PTC has vowed to continue the campaign against the show. The hope is to pressure advertisers into pulling out their ads. It is more likely the show would be cancelled for poor ratings over sponsors pulling their advertising. The show runner Chad Hodge downplayed the negative press with this statement (according to The Hollywood Reporter):
I think there is a perception of the show that is false. There are different brands of feminism and I don’t think it should be boxed into any one version. I think there was a perception that we were trying to do something politically ambitious or make a statement or make this a show about empowering women, which sounds super boring to me. That sounds like a documentary, which this certainly is not. This is more like Chicago, Moulin Rouge and All that Jazz, Desperate Housewives. This is a fun, sexy soap.
In truth the show is really like that; a fun, sexy soap with a little mystery wrapped into the glamourized world of the characters. Aside from the name, the show is like many other shows that are on television now. Some that come to mind are; Pan Am, Desperate Housewives, and Hell Cats. In fact, the models on America’s Next Top Model have been on television wearing less clothes than the girls in this show. Perhaps the controversy that has been stirred up will get more people interested in watching the show. What do you think of this new drama? Feel free to leave a comment below.
