The Riviera Hotel and Casino has become the hot spot in Nevada for all things roller derby. The Riviera just hosted Rollercon where ladies from around the world descended on Las Vegas to derby.
It wasn’t long ago that the Fabulous Sin City Roller Girls held their derbies in an old skating ring that had a funny smell. Now they are selling out their shows at the Riviera. This weekend was the start of Las Vegas’ Derby Preseason.
This is a great time to come watch these ladies skate. All the preseason derbies are themed, which I think are some of the best derbies to watch because the ladies dress up. It is a family fun type of an event.
This past derby was a double-header. Double-header means two derbies for the price of one. The price was only $15 at the door or if you become a friend of the Sin City Roller Girls on their Facebook page, you can get a discount code for Brown Paper Bag Tickets that drops the price to $10 a person. EMTs and children under 10 get in free.
So the first bout was between the Superheroes and the Villains. The kids got a kick out of seeing their favorite ladies dressed in the colors of red and blue of superheroes. When the ladies did their warm ups, their capes flowed. I must admit I was a bit impressed myself. Since this bout was not a sanctioned derby bout, the ladies played with their names to make them more superheroish with fun names like Captain PlanIt, Wonder Jane, Fantastic Force and even the Great Morbinski.
But unfortunately the cool costumes and the flowing capes wouldn’t stop the superheroes from getting spanked by the Villains 120 to 74. With Villains like Skeletor, False Conviction, Two Face, and the Juggernaut, the superheroes didn’t stand a chance.
In-between the bouts they had a demonstration by the Sin City Skulls. The Sin City Skulls is a Quad Rugby team, this means all players are in wheel chairs. I never knew such a sport existed but these athletes gave their all to demonstrate how Wheelchair Rugby is played. With crashes of steel on steel it was some fierce action. What a cool experience.
The derby wasn’t done yet as round two began with the entrance of the Freaks. Tina the Brawlerina, Patsy Behind, and VooDoo Stranglehold were just a few of the Freaks that were about to battle it out with the Geeks.
The Geeks lined up in their green and white outfits with taped-up glasses looking sweet and innocent. With names like Smarty McFly, Commodore and Kill Function, it seemed that the Geeks were really embracing their inner geeks.
The Freaks brought the attitude and were ready to crush the Geeks. The first jam was very physical with half of the players hitting the ground. Just like reality, you can only push a Geek so far before they snap. The Geeks worked together to slaughter the Freaks in a score of 142 to 53.
What a derby good time. It seemed whether young or old, everyone had a good time. The youngsters had a blast at the event from getting autographs from their favorite roller girls to entering half-time costume contests. It was fun for the whole family. I know this because I brought my family.
Can’t wait to see what the ladies are going to dress up as for the next bout on Nov. 19.
