When Fade To Black from Metallica started September 2 2011, CBS radio became the most hated company in the universe. This is the comapny responsible for cramming another sports station down the throats of Delaware Valley listeners.. Managment knew it was a decision that would not be popular with 99.9% of their listeners. If this was the year 1995, we would be done and that would be it. However, enter technology. Enter digital, streaming radio. Enter HD radio. CBS has three HD radio stations in the Philadelphia market. They are all free. With WIP now simulcast on FM , that meant one HD radio station open. WIPF HD3 is running as 94 WYSP!!!
People at the company stated they are trying to keep this up and running as a way to give people their rock. With anger at WIP and CBS radio, this is the smartest thing they can do. It also gives them control of the call letters, so when and if the sports talk format fails, they can come back on the air as WYSP.
Currently, the radio on the FM dial is playing sports talk. You need to be able to listen on a computer to radio.com. The other option is to purchase a HD radio. This is NOT XM or Sirius SAT radio. That requires a subscrition. HD radio is free. The radio is about $100.00. A decent antenna may be required for optimum recention. Some stereo receivers are HD compatible. Stand alone radios are available.
Car audio HD radios are also available for about $150.00. Some newer vehicles are equipped with HD radios already built in.
The rock is back but not the personalities. Those that listen are greeted with taped station identification of WMYSP and “WYSP The Rock You Grew Up With”. The WMYSP format was a way to have listeners program the radio station via online interactive input from listeners.
HD radio is fairly new and is not being pushed or given much publicity by big broadcasters, which does them a disservice. HD radios are available at most electronic stores like Best Buy. Some retailers such as Wal-Mart or HH Gregg do not stock them. As publicity surrounding the fact that WYSP is being broadcast over this medium is causing some area retailers to be sold out of their current stock.
For the next week, a direct link will be available on http://www.wysp.com The website is slated to be shut down by the end of September if not before. While radio personalities are not present on WYSP, niether are commercials. So if you want your fix of WYSP or other local, Philadelphia area radio stations, pick up an HD radio.
HD radio is very similar to rabbit ears on an older television set. There are several different sub channels attached to each boradcast station. For example, channels 6-1, 6-2,6-3 etc. It’s the same with HD Radio, with 94 WIP, 94-1,94-2, 94-3. To be fair, other stations such as WMGK and WMMR also have different HD channels to listen to that people mayt find attractive. There is a whole other world out there to explore besides sports talk.
