The Secret Circle (CW channel 6 in Phoenix) aired it’s second episode Thursday night, and the follow up was better than the premiere. It stands to reason, as the premiere was dedicated to introducing the main characters; Cassi (whose mother recently passed away in a mysterious fire that Ethan started) just arrived to Chance Harbor, Washington to live with her grandmother (the only upsetting part of the premiere was we saw no mourning from the devoted daughter… which will hopefully play out in the episodes to come), Diana who is Ethan’s daughter, dating Adam (a love interest for Cassi) and the heir apparent leader of the circle of witches, and mischievious Faye (Principle Dawn Chamberlain’s daughter) the want to be bad girl (with a little heart still in tact underneath the facade personna she portrays).
We didn’t learn much about Melissa (Faye’s low self esteem sidekick) and Nick (the other male of the group) until episode two, their opening scene was of them getting dressed after they obviously spent the night together. He doesn’t want to let anyone know about their hookup because she was an embarrassment, which we learn later in episode two, Faye doesn’t want to hook up with him because he was ‘beneath her’. That could definitely knock Melissa’s self esteem down a few more notches. While Nick has shown no real endearing qualities yet, Melissa may still surprise us… disagreeing with Faye’s objection to binding the circle was the start of her path to redemption.
Faye continued to loudly voice her disagreement with binding the circle to anyone who would listen. She even attempted to use the budding ‘friendship’ between Cassi and Adam as a distraction for Diana; telling her she needed to get her priorities straight. This led Diana to ask Adam if she has anything to worry about with him and Cassi. Adam was shocked by her question, so was the audience… we were even more shocked when she admitted she was insecure (Diana up to this point seemed like the most secure person of the group) and that she loved him. This conversation ended in a kiss and obvious reconnection between the two.
Cassi (who up to this point has said she wants nothing to do with the witches circle and is not interested in binding herself to anyone) tries to find new friends (normal, non supernatural witch friends) and connects with Sally. But Sally gets in Faye’s way and Faye (unintentionally, not knowing how strong her powers really were since cassi came to town) pushed Sally away, which landed her through a banister and onto the rocks at the beach below. Faye killed her.
While all this drama is happening between the teenagers, there is more sinister drama happening with their parents and grand parents. Last week Ethan (Diana’s father) used magic to keep Charles (Adam’s father) quiet about Amelia (Cassi’s mother). He filled Charles lungs with water and let him feel what it is like to drown. This week we learn, Charles called Henry (Faye’s grandfather) into town to report the use of magic, magic that was banned.
Here is where we learn that the story is not just about the six teens finding their magical gifts (or curses depending on how you look at it), the magic goes back through the generations… their parents were stripped of their powers after some tragedy that killed off half the circle (half their parents). This caused the grandparents to ban magic in take away the circle’s power. But apparently, (with the help of a couple of meddling parents Ethan and Dawn) the teens have discovered they have magic too.
We discover this week, that Ethan used a magic crystal as fuel for his magical deeds last week, Dawn took the crystal from him and warned not to use up all the power. Once she had the crystal she used it to save Faye from murder charges as she revived the dead Sally (will there be consequences to bringing back someone from the dead like the Vampire Diaries) and kill Henry.
After the close call for Faye, the teens decide it is best they do bind the circle. They meet on the beach and complete the ceremony. Only 2 million tuned in to watch the second episode, will you be watching the 3rd? The previews to next week’s episode shows, the binding has consequences too (check out the video to the left for more details). Are you enjoying the layers of drama in this new CW series? Is this show on your ‘must watch’ list? Who do you want to see prevail in the love triangle between Diana, Cassi and Adam? Feel free to leave a comment below.
