We have only 4 days left to prepare for Halloween 2011. Hopefully safety is of the utmost priority. The Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas cites Halloween as one of the top holidays for generating pediatric emergency room visits. According to Snopes, tampering with candy is definitely not the prime suspect in these unplanned excursions. But parading a bunch of unwary youngsters around dark neighborhoods in unwieldy, unfamiliar costumes presents all manner of opportunity for mishaps.
Is trick-or-treating an absolute “must” in your book? If reading about our cultural endorsement of sex, death, violence, and material values through our choice of costumes has not given you a fresh perspective, and if you have not reevaluated your Halloween traditions at the revelation that America’s insatiable appetite for fear means that this nation seeks the spiritual antithesis of God, Who is Love, then at least make this Halloween a safe one.
The Houston Police Department has compiled a list of safety tips to guide your trick-or-treating activities and to make your property as safe as possible for those who will be stopping by. It also suggests checking your local schools, fire stations, libraries and shopping centers for alternate forms of entertainment.
We should be wise in the way we conduct our activities. But ultimately, our lives are in God’s hands. What moves God to act on our behalf? If we repent of our evil ways and seek God’s face, then He will hear from heaven and heal our land. To seek God’s face is to seek to know Him. If you do not know Him, you cannot love Him, for whom would you be loving? Loving God is our foremost commandment, along with loving our neighbor, for all of the law is summed up in these.
God said that if we love Him, we will keep His commandments. The following are all included amongst the sins punishable by eternity in the lake of fire: not caring for the needy, practicing immorality, telling lies, being violent, committing murder, witchcraft, idolatry, denying God and being cowardly. Immorality is defined as an act of the body, i.e. sexual impurity. Idolatry is anything you willfully pursue before – and apart from – God. Are you willing to take God with you to your Halloween festivities? “Cowardly” here refers to not standing for God’s Word and His Righteousness in the face of the world’s opposition. Based on this list, you cannot endorse – by your actions or words – sex, death, violence or material values and still keep God’s commandments.
But if we choose to celebrate in ways that glorify God by reflecting His nature and desires, we can be certain that He will protect us and answer our cries. “And we know that God causes all [tricks] to work together for [treats] to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Now that’s Romans 8:28 for you in Halloween lingo!
