The Vampire Diaries continued Thursday at 8PM on CW 11 in Queens with “Ghost World.” Mystic Falls celebrated the Night of Illumination, and more ghosts appeared.
The Vampire Diaries “Smells Like Teen Spirit” recap: Ghosts, a surprise return
Damon came to, chained to a chair and his ring off, thinking it was Stefan, who showed up and said it wasn’t him. Mason opened the drapes, and Damon began to burn. Caroline and Bonnie talked about the Jeremy-Anna situation, but Damon interrupted to tell them about Mason. Elena turned to Jeremy about trying to reach Lexi to help Stefan, but Alaric wasn’t so ready to summon more dead people. When Bonnie went to pick up her bag, her grimoire opened to a spell to reveal ghosts.
Anna told Jeremy that she didn’t think all supernatural spirits were on the other side and some found peace. He walked off when Anna said not to tell Elena she was there. In the bathroom, he asked her if the witch who helped Vicki was helping her, but Anna swore she wasn’t a danger to anyone. She said she was only there because Jeremy wanted to be with her and to send her away. Instead, he kissed her. Damon told Alaric about Mason, and when Bonnie finished the spell, Sheila appeared before her. Elena walked in on Jeremy and Anna kissing—and could see her. Mason joined Damon and Alaric at the bar. Stefan saw Lexi, who said he was off the rails and she was going to help him. She knocked him out.
Grams told Bonnie she understood what she did, but she opened a door to the other side, and a witch took advantage. She said Bonnie had to set the balance of nature back, and Caroline told Elena over the phone that Bonnie needed to destroy the necklace to set things right. Jeremy asked Elena not to tell Bonnie, and she said it was up to him to do that. When she left the bathroom, Lexi appeared, ready to help with Stefan. Mason told Damon he wanted an apology and was there to help Tyler. He knew a way to kill Klaus, but wanted an apology first. Mason told Damon to meet him at the Lockwood cellar with a shovel. Lexi had Stefan chained up, and Elena told Lexi what Klaus did. Lexi was determined to force him to turn his humanity back on. The first step was drying him out to take away the bloodlust.
Damon joined Mason at the Lockwood cellar, and the ghost explained there was an old Lockwood legend about a weapon that would kill an Original. They broke down a wall, and Damon made Mason go first. Meanwhile, Stefan begged to be let out, but Lexi explained he was hallucinating. Elena told Caroline Bonnie had to hold off on sending the ghosts back, but Caroline didn’t feel like dealing with boyfriend dramas, leading to Bonnie finding out about Jeremy and Anna. Speaking of, Jeremy was looking for Anna, but the vampires from the tomb found her first. They had unfinished business with the founding families and started with killing the speaker at Illumination Night.
Stefan tried to get Elena to help him, saying he’d change, but Lexi told her it was a lie. He even tried to tell Elena he loved her, but when that didn’t work, he switched to saying he wished he never met her. Lexi explained they needed to make him feel something once he was weak enough, and she stabbed him. Elena left. Jeremy called and told Caroline and Bonnie they had to find the necklace. It wasn’t where it was supposed to be, but Anna insisted she didn’t take it. However, when Jeremy turned around, Anna was gone.
Damon still thought Mason had ulterior motives and he seemed to be right when he left after Damon triggered a trap and was stabbed. Elena found Jeremy, who said he loved Anna. She told him it wasn’t real and Anna was dead. He couldn’t love a ghost for the rest of his life. Anna showed up again, and Elena told her she was holding Jeremy back. Anna held out the necklace, and Elena told Jeremy to call Bonnie.
Mason returned and freed Damon, explaining that he was seeking redemption, not revenge, and to help Tyler. Caroline had Bonnie leave her off when she noticed the tomb vampires going after Tyler’s mother. Jeremy told Anna that just because they were going to break the spell didn’t mean they had to say goodbye, but she told him Elena was right. She had been hoping to find her mother and didn’t want to be alone. She gave him the necklace. Lexi kept trying to get through to Stefan, and Elena returned to tell her they were running out of time. Lexi reminded Stefan that the necklace represented hope to him. In the cave, Damon was held back by a barrier, leaving Mason to explore further.
Jeremy brought the necklace to Bonnie, and she threw it into the fire. Sheila joined her for the spell. Tyler’s mother came to in time to see Caroline fighting off the vampires before they disappeared. Mason had just found something when he disappeared. Lexi told Elena Stefan was still in there and she just had to break through. Elena told her she knew what to do and Lexi could be free. She disappeared. Anna saw her mother and they reunited before disappearing. Sheila told Bonnie she was proud of her before leaving as well.
Elena still had hope that she would get through to Stefan, and she told him he needed to fight through it or he would lose her forever. She locked him in. Jeremy tried to talk to Bonnie, but she wasn’t interested and told him to go. The fireplace sparked and when she looked, the locket was whole once again. Damon had called in Alaric for help, and he found etchings on the cave wall.
