Vampire Diaries Ghost World explores what happens when you open the door to the other side letting through anyone who has unfinished business. Some may be out for revenge, but some are just looking for redemption.
Under the watchful eye of Mason Lockwood, Damon comes to chained to a chair with a fireplace poker through this chest. His ring is laying on the floor. He thinks that Stefan is responsible, but Stefan is merely amused. He tells Damon that he didn’t do this to him, but he does remove the poker before leaving. Mason throw open the curtains and Damon starts to burn in the sun.
The whole town is preparing for the Night of Illumination. Tobias Fell is giving a speech on the history of the night when Elena arrives, meeting Jeremy and Alaric…and Anna. Anna is making jokes about the speech and Jeremy is trying not to laugh. They take each other’s hand.
Caroline and Bonnie are busy hanging lanterns. Caroline asks her if the spell she did to send Vicky away sent Anna away too. Bonnie says no, all she did was block the magic of the witch that was helping Vicky. Jeremy still has a direct line to the other side. Bonnie went against the balance of nature by bringing Jeremy back and now she’s paying the consequences.
Damon drives up to deliver some interesting news. He tells Bonnie that something went wrong with her spell because he was just spit roasted by Mason Lockwood’s ghost. Bonnie is shocked that his ghost is about to physically interact with Damon.
I don’t have time for a vengeful Lockwood. When I kill someone, they’re supposed to stay dead. Whatever you screwed up, fix it.
Elena tells Jeremy that she needs his help. Historically, when Stefan has gone off the rails it’s been Lexi who was able to pull him back. She wants Jeremy to try to reach her. If she at least knew what Lexi did, maybe she could help Stefan. Jeremy isn’t overly optimistic. They discuss “the other side” and what it’s like there. They aren’t able to interact with people.
Alaric points out that Vicky could interact, she blew up his car. Jeremy explains that Vicky had help from the other side and Anna is acting alone. Alaric says maybe they should consider their lesson learned about summoning dead people.
Matt assures Bonnie and Caroline that he hasn’t seen Vicky. She’s concerned that it could be her haunting Damon instead of Mason Lockwood. If Damon is right and another ghost has a foothold there, something has gone badly wrong. Matt says he’s had enough of ghosts and walks away. Bonnie’s bag falls open and her grimoire flips open by itself to a manifestation spell to reveal ghosts.
Elena asks if it’s even possible to contact Lexi. Jeremy’s not sure, he had no attachment to her, he never even met her. Elena wants to push the issue but Alaric is understandably reluctant.
Don’t you think we have a few too many dead vampires in our past to be sitting here thinking of them watching us?
Anna says that she doesn’t think all supernatural spirits go to the other side, some of them find peace. She asks Jeremy not to tell Elena that she’s there. He says he’s going inside to check his work schedule.
Stefan arrives and takes Jeremy’s seat. He picks up his journal from the table and flips through it. He says he forgot how much he used to care. He tells Elena not to torture herself with memories from the past, it’s best for them both to move on. He says he’s there to watch out for Elena and jokes that there will be people all over the place soon, lots to eat.
Bonnie and Caroline go to the old witch house. Caroline is nervous but Bonnie assures her that the witches aren’t there now and made it clear they were never coming back. Caroline helps with preparations and Bonnie begins the spell.
Anna goes into the bathroom with Jeremy. She tells him that he asked her to lie to Elena because she’s Bonnie’s best friend and wouldn’t like what’s going on. They can’t figure out just what that is, how they’re able to touch. Jeremy makes her swear to him that she isn’t getting help from the witch on the other side.
Jeremy says it’s all wrong, he shouldn’t even be talking to her. Anna reminds him that she’s only there because he wants her to be and tells him to send her away. He says he doesn’t know what is going on, but before it’s done, he has to do this and kisses her.
Damon turns to Alaric for help. Alaric tells him that they’re not a team, they’re not friends, Damon tried to kill him and he doesn’t like him anymore. Damon asks if he remembers when he did like him and they conspired to kill Uncle Werewolf Mason Lockwood. He thinks he’s still a little pissed.
Bonnie’s spell is causing winds to circle the room and the candles to flicker. Caroline is scared. Suddenly Bonnie’s hands are no longer empty, they’re clutching the hands of her Grams.
Elena walks in the bathroom to see Jeremy and Anna kissing. Stefan is walking down the street and sees a reflection in a car window. He turns to see Lexi standing behind him. Alaric and Damon are joined at the bar by Mason Lockwood. He drinks the shot of whisky and smashes the glass on Damon’s head. Damon turns to Alaric.
Stefan tells Lexi that she’s dead. She points out that technically so is he. She doesn’t know how long she’ll be there so she wants to get right down to business. Stefan is off the rails, big time. He tells her to leave him alone but she’s not going to take no for an answer. She slams his head into the car window.
Bonnie is overwhelmed with emotions at seeing her grandmother. Grams tells her to stop crying, they don’t have time for tears. She tells Bonnie that she’s made a fine mess, she was warned there would be consequences for brining Jeremy back. Bonnie says she loves him, she didn’t have a choice. Grams understands but Bonnie has cracked open the door to the other side. When she cast the spell to send Vicky away, the witch on the other side wedged the door open allowing anyone with unfinished business to come back.
Bonnie wants to know what the witch wants, but Grams says that’s Original vampire business and none of her concern. She is there because Bonnie has upset the balance of nature so now she has to set it right and close the door.
Caroline is on the phone with Elena explaining what has to be done. The old witch can draw power from the living side because of a talisman, Elena’s necklace. Bonnie needs to destroy it and Caroline’s worried that will upset Elena.
I just walked in on Jeremy kissing the reason I’m completely okay with that.
Caroline is shocked. Elena tells her that Damon has the necklace, to text him. She tells Anna to disappear. Jeremy says it isn’t her fault and Elena agrees. Anna disappears and Jeremy begs Elena not to tell Bonnie. She says she’ll let him do that.
Elena walks out of the bathroom and right into Lexi. She tells her it’s time for ripper detox 101, the crash course. Elena seems reluctant and Lexi asks if she didn’t just say how desperate she was for her help in saving Stefan’s life. Elena decides to go with her.
Damon checks his messages and says he’s never going to hear the end of that necklace.
He tells Mason to get to it, he killed him and now he wants revenge, get in line. Mason says actually he wants an apology. Alaric chuckles and wishes him luck. Mason says he’s there to help Tyler.
Sorry to break it to you, buddy, but Tyler can’t be helped. At least not while Klaus is alive, which is like, always.
Mason says not if the could find a weapon that could kill him. Damon starts to protest but then asks him what he knows. Mason wants an apology first. Damon balks and Alaric asks him if he’s incapable of remorse.
You’re right, I didn’t have to kill you. I do a lot of things I don’t have to do.
Mason laughs, but accepts the apology. He tells Damon to meet him at the old Lockwood cellar with a shovel. He looks at Alaric and tells Damon to come alone. He asks if Mason is going to bury him alive and he says not to tempt him.
Lexi has Stefan in the Forbes cell, shackled to the chair. Elena tells her that Klaus compelled him to turn of his humanity. Lexi says they’re just going to have to convince him to turn it back on She warns Elena that it’s not going to be pretty. She kicks Stefan’s leg to wake him up. He’s furious and tells Elena to send Lexi away. Lexi tells him to be quiet, she’s trying to get inside his head.
Lexi says the first step is to dry him out, starve away the bloodlust and take away the temptation. She stares into Stefan’s eyes. He becomes confused, maybe a little panicked, then begins to writhe and cry out in pain. The veins in his hands and arms start to protrude as he starts to starve. He screams at Lexi, asking what she’s doing.
Doing what I do best, Sweetness. I’m saving your life.
Damon and Mason are at the old Lockwood cellar. Mason says he’s surprised he showed up and Damon explains that he hit a snag in his other Klaus lead so he’s highly motivated. Mason says that Michael didn’t turn out so good. Damon asks how he knows so much and Mason says there was nothing to do on the other side but sit around and watch other people screw things up.
Mason tells Damon there’s an old Lockwood family legend about a weapon that can kill an Original vampire and they kept it buried. Mason begins to slowly chip at a brick wall then Damon takes over, making a whole big enough to pass through in seconds. He makes Mason go first, just in case it’s a trap.
Stefan is muttering to himself, he wants out. Elena asks what’s happening and Lexi explains that he’s hallucinating.
That’s three months without any blood. Now he’s at nine month, two years, five.
Stefan asks Lexi if he ever told her how glad he is that she’s dead. Caroline calls and says that they can’t find the necklace. Elena tells her to get Bonnie to hold off on sending the ghosts back. She needs Lexi’s help with Stefan. Caroline tells her to find the necklace first then worry about boyfriend ghost dramas. Bonnie overhears and asks what she’s talking about. Caroline explains Elena’s situation then tells Bonnie that Elena caught Jeremy kissing Anna.
Jeremy is searching the crowd for Anna and runs into Frederick, one of the tomb vampires. Carol Lockwood asks Alaric if he’s seen Tobias Fell. He was supposed to do the lighting ceremony. Frederick finds Anna just before Jeremy does. He and the tomb vampires have come to the founder’s celebration to handle some unfinished business with the founding families. Alaric fills in for Tobias since they can’t find him. When the lanterns light up someone screams. Tobias’s dead body is hanging from one of the trees. Anna looks at Frederick who just smiles.
Stefan is getting worse. He’s sweating and panting, begging Elena to help him. Elena says that she is helping him. Lexi tells her to separate herself from her emotions and not give in. He goes from confessing his love to telling Elena that he wishes he’d never met her. Lexi says it’s the ripper talking. Once he’s weak enough, they have to make him feel things…pain, anger, rage, make him see past the blood. She stakes him in the arm and tells Elena to think of it as a daily regiment until he can be saved. He yells in Lexi’s face that he will rip her apart and she reminds him that he can’t because she’s already dead. She stakes him again and Elena runs from the cell.
Elena hears the sirens and goes to investigate. Bonnie and Caroline are still searching Damon’s room, including the soap dish where he hid the moonstone. Jeremy calls asking if they’ve found the necklace. He tells Caroline what happened to Tobias Fell and says they might want to find the necklace before the tomb vampire ghosts start going alphabetically through the founding families. Caroline is suspicious that Anna could have taken the necklace. Anna denies it and Jeremy believes her. Caroline calls him an idiot and tells him to wake up before he loses everything.
Mason and Damon are moving through the underground tunnels. Mason tells Damon that he knows he’ll do anything for Stefan and he won’t screw him over as long as they have the same agenda. They come to a fork and Damon asks Mason which way to go. When Mason isn’t sure Damon says he thought he was all-knowing.
I’m a ghost, not God.
Mason tells him to go left so Damon automatically goes right. Mason tells him he has trust issues. Damon starts down the path and is shot through with multiple wooden spears.
Anna disappears just as Elena finds Jeremy. He says he doesn’t know where she is or that she took the necklace. Elena says she was the only one who knew about it. They have to get it back, destroy it and close the door. Jeremy knows that’s what needs to happen but he’s reluctant. He can be with Anna again, touch her, kiss her. He loves her. Elena tells him it’s not real, it’s in the past. She asks if he’s going to love a ghost for the rest of his life.
Anna reappears and Elena tells her that she’s just holding Jeremy back. Anna raises her hand and she’s holding the necklace. Elena tells Jeremy to call Bonnie, tell her he has the necklace, and get her to send the ghosts away.
Staked through and unable to move, Damon announces that he’s having a bad day. Mason returns with the shovel to break the spears and free Damon. Damon is suspicious. He goes through the laundry list of everything he did to Mason and tells him there’s no way this buddy trust act is real. Mason tells him on the other side he’s all alone.
We watch the people we left behind and we regret our decisions. Look, I can’t change what happened to me, but maybe I can change what happens to Tyler. I don’t need revenge, Damon, I need redemption.
Caroline tells Bonnie that Jeremy has the necklace and he’s going to meet them at the witch house. As they drive along, they find Carol Lockwood’s car run into a tree. The tomb vampire ghosts are closing in on her. Caroline makes Bonnie leave here there.
Bonnie, you’ve got your ghost boyfriend drama and Elena has hers and right now the mother of mine is about to be ghost bait. So go and send them all back to the other side, okay?
Jeremy tells Anna that the spell is just going to break her foothold. She’ll still be there, he’ll still be able to see her, it doesn’t have to be goodbye. Anna says it should be, she’s just holding him back. She’s sorry that she took the necklace. She thought with all the tomb vampires out she might be able to find her mother. He reassures her that there is peace to be found and tells her that she isn’t going to be alone anymore, he won’t let her be alone. She gives him the necklace.
Lexi tells Stefan to quit fighting her, she knows he’s in there. He says she wasted her whole life taking care of him. Now she’s dead and she still has nothing better to do. Elena rushes in and says they’re running out of time, Bonnie is about to destroy the necklace and close the door. Lexi thinks the necklace could be the key. She tells Stefan to remember how he felt about it, he found it in his darkest time and when he made it through he said it represented home. Stefan says it’s ironic then that it’s about to be blown to pieces.
Damon runs up against a block in the tunnel. He can’t go any further, he isn’t invited in. Mason goes on without him and says Damon will just have to trust him.
Jeremy arrives at the witch house and gives Bonnie the necklace. She throws it into the fire and begins to chant. Suddenly Grams is beside her, chanting with her. Caroline is fighting the tomb vampires as Carol comes to in the car. One moment Frederick grabs her by the throat and the next he is gone. Mason raises his lantern to look at the wall. As he starts to tell Damon what he found he disappears and his lantern crashes to the floor.
Lexi tells Elena that Stefan is still in there, she just has to break through. Elena tells Lexi that she knows what to do now, she can be free. Lexi smiles then disappears. Anna is walking through town and sees her mother coming toward her. They run to each other and embrace just before they both disappear. Grams tells Bonnie that she is stronger than all of this and she’s proud of her, then she disappears as well.
Alaric finds Damon in the cellar. Damon had no one else to call because he needed a non-vampire to get in and other than Elena Alaric is the only one he trusts. Damon says if Mason could get over the fact he killed him, can’t Alaric cut him a little slack. Alaric says he shouldn’t have to get over it, he shouldn’t have done it in the first place.
Well, sometimes, I do things I don’t have to do.
Alaric asks if he’s going to recycle the same poor apology he gave Mason. Damon says yeah, but he didn’t mean it with Mason.
Stefan asks Elena what she’s going to do. Is she just going to stand there and wait for him to dry out. She says she’s going home to take care of Jeremy, be a friend to Bonnie and do everything else she needs to in life. Stefan says he wondered when she was going to give up and asks if Lexi gave her enough of a glimpse into her tragic future.
I haven’t given up, Stefan. I still have hope, but there’s nothing that I can do until you get yours back…You can break through this. Fight for it. Feel something, anything, Stefan. Because if you don’t you’re going to lose me forever. I won’t love a ghost for the rest of my life.
Jeremy says he owes Bonnie an explanation. She says that Matt gave up his sister before he could give up Anna. What he owes her is the respect of not making her listen to him explain himself. He says he’s sorry and she tells him to go. Alone, Bonnie takes a deep breath the something bursts in the fire. She walks over to the fireplace to find the necklace laying there, intact.
Damon asks Alaric if Mason was screwing with him or if there is really something there. Alaric lifts his lantern, showing a wall covered in what looks like cave drawings. Damon asks what he’s found and Alaric says he has no idea.
Another fabulous whirlwind episode. Some points to ponder. Since Jeremy died and Bonnie brought him back, is Anna really taking him from Bonnie or should he be Anna’s now? Are Alaric and Damon going to be able to patch things up? Will Elena really have the strength to see Stefan through this? Will Klaus come back before she gets a chance? What do all those drawings in the tunnels mean?
As always, questions answered but many more to be asked. What are your thought
