‘The X Factor’ judge Simon Cowell has proven himself to be the biggest talent scout in the world. You don’t get there without a discerning ear and eye, and an immediate feel for the ‘total package’. While Cowell has earned a reputation delivering criticism in an often crude and snarky way, let’s not forget the up side: Simon Cowell delivers dreams to those who are truly talented. And now he is delivering the American Dream to the lucky winner of the US ‘The X Factor’ in the form of 5 million dollars. Flint area viewers are buzzing about the new show, the new format and a somewhat new Simon Cowell. One local viewer told me, ‘I think we’re finally seeing a softer side of Simon. He seems less critical – or more open.’ Another viewer said, ‘Simon is still Simon, but he doesn’t seem to go on and on with the cut downs like before.’
Could it be that Simon Cowell is going soft, or is he really a teddy bear at heart? ‘The X Factor’ team stopped by ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ yesterday, and even DeGeneres told Cowell that what people don’t realize is ‘you are kind’.
Throughout recent auditions it seems Cowell has been visibly moved during several great performances, and he’s handed out a lot of compliments. He told Joshua, a ‘burrito slinger’ who slayed Etta James ‘At Last’ in his audition, that ‘he didn’t think he could ever be surprised again’. But, he was blown away by Joshua’s voice.
And, 14-year-old Drew took a big chance singing ‘her version’ of Justin Bieber’s ‘Baby’ in front of LA Reid. Cowell agreed with Nicole Scherzinger, that he preferred her version over Bieber’s and he told her that she did exactly what he wanted a 14-year-old to do in this competition. When Reid told her she was ‘special’, she was ecstatic. She said the audition would either be the end of the world, or the beginning of a new life. It seems like all 4 judges feel Drew is one step closer to making her dream come true.
Here’s the thing: Simon Cowell likes what he does and he’s the best in the business at it. When he’s gruff, he usually has a good reason for it. It’s also obvious he’s moved by talent and determination. He’s a dream maker. He finds artists who become global sensations. The nice thing is, now he’s brought ‘The X Factor’ to the US so that one lucky person will earn a piece of American Dream pie. Thanks for spreading the love, Simon. Keep doing what you do because we like it…
