Clevelanders looking for a family-friendly and fun autumn day trip need to look no further that the 45th annual Ohio Mart being held at the historic Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens in Akron on Thursday, September 29 through Sunday, October 2. It is approximately a 45 minute drive from Cleveland to Akron.
Ohio Mart Taking place among the historic landscaped gardens and the grounds of Stan Hywet Hall amidst the scenery of vibrant autumn colors, Ohio Mart offers a wide variety of sights, sounds and activities that are sure to delight the whole family. More than 15,000 people are expected to be in attendance.
Ohio Mart will feature more than 130 artisans and craftspeople offering a wide variety of items including one-of-a-kind sculptures, handcrafted furniture, jewelry and holiday items. There will also be a number of demonstrations where visitors can watch items being created. More than 300 quilts will be on display from the Stitchery Showcase.
Children’s activities include face painting, giant size chess and checkers games, pumpkin painting and hands-on musical activities with the Akron Symphony Orchestra (Saturday and Sunday only).
Thursday and Friday entertainment includes InFlight Dancers demonstrating the art of ballroom dance and offering lessons. Entertainment on the weekend includes performances by the a cappella Firestone High School Madrigals and Fergie and the Bog Dogs providing traditional Celtic music (Saturday, October 1).
A wide variety of food will be available in the Food Tent and dessert can be obtained at the Bakery Tent which includes Ohio Mart’s famous gingerbread and gingerbread cookies. Visitors can even buy a whole roll of gingerbread dough to take home. Special Note: Be sure to check out the special commemorative cookie created in honor of the Ohio Mart’s 45th anniversary.
There will also be lots of shopping opportunities at Molly’s Shop (Stan Hywet Hall’s gift shop) offering a 20% discount on new Fall merchandise. There are also items for sale in the Curiosity Shop, the Craft Shop and the Garden Committee Shop, all located in the Carriage House on the grounds.
Molly’s Shop will also be hosting book signings. On Friday from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Jeff Iula, author of “How I Saw It: My Photographic Memory of the Soap Box Derby” will be appearing and on Saturday from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Patricia Latimer, author of “Ohio Wine Country Excursions” will make an appearance.
A Bit of Stan Hywet Hall History Named for the Old English words “hewn stone,” the 65-room Tudor style mansion was built in 1912 by Goodyear Rubber Company founder F.A. Seiberling and his wife Gertrude. Designed after several British mansions by Cleveland architect Charles Sumner Schneider, the mansion took 4 years to complete at a cost of $150,000. Today Stan Hywet Hall is a National Historic Landmark.
Hours for the Ohio Mart are 10 a.m – 5 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and 10 a.m.- 4 p.m on Sunday. Admission is $8 for adults, $2 for youths 6-17 and children 5 and under are free. Parking is $5 at the Great Meadow at Stan Hywett. On Saturday and Sunday only, parking is free at Firestone High School with a free shuttle to and from Stan Hywet.
