It’s not an iPhone 5?
While the press conference at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, CA, today was essentially the meeting place for the expected announcement of the iPhone 5, Phil Schiller, vice president of worldwide product marketing for Apple, unveiled the iPhone 4S instead; a super version of the previous iPhone 4 with improvements in performance and features.
The iPhone 4S: “It’s remarkable”
Phil Schiller said that the iPhone 4S was seven times more powerful than the previous iPhone model.
The new iPhone 4S will take on gaming tasks with ease and provide better graphics through its new Retina display and improved dual-core A5 processor.
“I’m proud to tell about the brand new iPhone 4S Retina display, inside it is all new. How? First has a new chip inside, the A5 chip now in the iPhone. Apple designed chip, dual core processor, twice as fast, and dual core graphics, up to 7k times faster than previous iPhone.
“You’ll really see it scream on games. It’s remarkable.”
While gaming and graphics are important features to iPhone fans, the iPhone 4S will also have:
- 8-hours of talk time
- 40-hours of music listening
- Newly designed reception scheme with dual antennas for picking up signals
- World phone capabilities
- Better low-light performance for camera
- Backside illumination sensor for better image resolution
- Macro camera function
- 1080p video playback
- New Siri voice recognition
A phone that can talk back to you
A new voice recognition feature, Siri, allows iPhone 4S owners to literally talk to their iPhones and have it vocally respond to their questions.
A question was spoken to the iPhone 4S while the Siri feature was activated.
The question asked was, “What is the weather forecast for today/”
The iPhone 4S replied and said: “Here is the forecast for today…”
The crowd at the news event broke into applause.
How much and when?
The new iPhone 4S will be available in black and white models on October 14. Preorders start on October 7.
The pricing for the iPhone 4S is as follows:
- 16GB: $199
- 32GB: $299
- 64GB: $399
Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint will offer the new iPhone 4S with T-Mobile sitting it out till further notice.
What happened to the iPhone 5?
That is the million dollar question as perplexed and puzzled spectators at the press event left scratching their heads in bewilderment and a bit of confusion as to what happened.
During the three hour presentation, not a word was mentioned about the iPhone 5, nor was there an explanation for its absence.
It really exists, doesn’t it?
Reports from sources from all over the world indicates the existence of an iPhone 5 to be real–from its form factor and features to its shape and screen size. The no-show of the long awaited next-gen phone by the public was met, instead, with an upgraded iPhone 4.
This may hurt Apple’s credibility and sales as a great deal of potential customers were looking forward to the arrival of an iPhone 5 and not an improved iPhone 4. If Apple doesn’t address the concerns over the no-show of the iPhone 5 soon, sales of its iPhone 4S may be hurt as the Apple faithful wait it out for an iPhone 5.
The stock market reacts
Upon the news of no news of the iPhone 5, Apple shares took a dive of 3.8 percent in the value of its shares in afternoon trading on Wall Street. The huge interest and buzz generated for the iPhone 5 literally disappeared in front of the press as it became all too clear that time was running out for its anticipated reveal.
And to everyone’s surprise, time did run out.
A big disappointment for Apple fans
There were rumors that the iPhone 5 was experiencing problems with its production due to its new form factor. Could this be the reason for the delay? That is up for speculation and water cooler chats.
But this is certain, the expectation of an announcement of the iPhone 5 today was met with an updated iPhone 4 instead. Not a bad phone by any means, but not what everyone was looking forward to.
Now, the big question is, when will the iPhone 5 show up? Or to put it another way, perhaps it already has in the skin of the iPhone 4S.
