Tollbridge Campground, just outside Hood River is a great little spot and will be open until October 31st. It features beautiful river scenery, a covered picnic area and camping. Not being on the list of state parks that people visit regularly gives it the opportunity to be less crowded and gives you something new to go see.
Combine it with a loop trip up the gorge and around Mt. Hood on Hwy 35 and you will have a trip that could be remarkable. It’s very pleasant to drive past fields and orchards in Hood River and if you wanted you could stop by Multnomah Falls on the way up.
Directions for the tour: Take Hwy I-84 East from Portland, Take exit 28 to pass several waterfalls on Hwy 30, including Multnomah Falls. After about 6 miles, get back on Hwy I-84 heading East until you get to Hood River. Take the Hwy 35 South exit. When it merges with Hwy 26, go West to Portland.
