Today’s animal message comes from Lizard. Lizard reminds you to pay attention to your dreams, knowing that they can be shadows of your fears, hopes, or anything you may be resisting. Anything you have focused a lot of attention on in your day may show up in your dreams.
If Lizard has come out of the cards today, it may be time to look at what you are trying to avoid. Are your fears following you, or is your future trying to catch up to you? Are you trying to ignore your weaknesses? Since Lizard is so focused on dreams, it may be a warning to pay attention to your dreams and what they might be trying to tell you. Dreams are very important. Pay attention to them.
On the contrary, Lizard may be telling you that you need more sleep or that you have a lack of dreams for your future. Imagination is the door to new ideas and creations. Lizard medicine reminds you that in the dreaming process, the subconscious is processing all of the events of your day and leaves you with symbols that will help you in understanding your direction in life. Messages we get from our dreams may involve feelings about any inner conflict, feelings about new ideas or goals, other dimensions of awareness, future events, or your desires and hopes.
There are two opposing ways Lizard may be warning us about our dreams. On the one hand, Lizard is reminding us of the importance of looking to our imaginations for new experiences. On the other hand, Lizard may be telling those who dream too much to come back to reality. Dreams should be used as tools to bring about that vision into their lives. Are you the dreamer? Or are you the dreamed?
In the Native American tradition, animals play a large role. They believe in the power of animals for healing and that they give messages pertinent to what that individual may need to learn either for that day or for their entire lives. Native Americans will meditate and ask to know their spirit guides. Whatever animal is made known has significance on that person’s life. Many tribe members will design a totem pole (such as the one at Crow’s Nest, about 40 minutes away from South Bend in Dowagiac, MI) that includes the images of the animals that they believe have important significance for their lives.
Each animal has a different spirit and lesson to teach a person. Jamie Sims and David Carson have developed a set of cards similar to a Tarot card deck that includes images of different animals, called Medicine Cards. The accompanying book outlines what each card means for the person who draws it. There are suggestions in the book for card layouts, but drawing one card for the day and considering how the description of that animal’s lessons plays into your life is also a good way to use the cards. Similar to the Christians’ view that random Bible passages can have amazing significance, the animals can also have messages for us in the same way. As always, listen to the message, and accept what resonates, but if it does not, you can leave it here.
