With a great amount of media photographers and other camera mavens roaming the halls of NYCC/AF 2011 looking to get images of the hundreds of cosplayers there, are you curious what characters garnered the most shutter snaps? How many of these characters did you see in your daily treks around the floors of the Javits Center?
#10 Fairy Tail
Because of the decision to promote Fairy Tail with badges, posters, and creator Hiro Mashima coming to the NY Anime Fest there was a large influx of people cosplaying as characters from this rising star Manga.
#9 Marvel Universe
Due to an even amount of cosplayers of a bunch of Marvel characters I felt Marvel Universe said it all. Captain America, various X-Men, and Spiderman are only a few of the names people came to Comic Con as from the pages of Stan Lee’s empire.
#8 Dr. Who
Possibly the most popular British science fiction show of all-time, Dr. Who, or “The Doctor” as most people call him, travels to different dimensions in his Police Box solving the world’s problems and dragging along various people along the way. This year’s con featured many people dressed as the Doctor himself as well as a few of his assistants, particularly Amelia Pond.
#7 Sailor Moon
Every planet was represented twice plus a few appearences of Tuxedo Mask. There was also at least one crossplayer in the crowd as one of the planets.
There have been a mix of opinions to the popularity of Naruto cosplayers this year. Some feel a great amount of those who came as Naruto, Sasuke, and many MANY Akatsuki members decided on Naruto because of the visit by the Japanese actress who voices Naruto: Junko Takeuchi. While this may be true it still doesn’t take away from the fact Naruto is still very popular among cosplayers.
If there was ever a series where almost every character was eventually cosplayered it would be Pokemon. From at least 3 different MudKipz to a variety of Team Rocket members Pokemon cosplayers definitely didn’t miss this convention.
Many versions of Miku were present along with Rin and others of the hugely popular vocal software program.
#3 Harley Quinn
With or without Mr. J, Harley is quickly becoming the most popular Batman villain to cosplayers. We’ve seen them toting giant mallets, corkguns, joke pistols that shoot out flags, and many other fun weapons. They varied in costume styles, heights, and body types while only a few went to the length of changing their hair and other details to really mimic the look of Harley. Will the popularity continue?
Known for being able to crack jokes while kicking butt in Mutant X and other series Deadpool invaded NYCC/AF with a vengeance! One or two in a convention has been the norm for a while but this year’s NYCC/AF featured the additions of Deadpool Corps members Lady Deadpool , Kid Deadpool, Dogpool, and Headpool.
No I don’t mean the stupid creatures of the 90s with Don King’s hair. No matter where I walked I kept seeing people with blue facepaint and, as one person on Facebook called them, “candy corn” horns. Numbering possibly over 100 members of their fan club, these cosplayers represented the Trolls of the Homestuck series from MS Paint Adventures. Originally centered on kids stuck in their houses and using a messenger-type program called PESTERCHUM to communicate with each other, these Trolls became a popular group to literally pester the kids.
