With many legitimate companies offering giveaways on Facebook, Twitter and just about everywhere you look online, you can win prizes that range from food coupons to cars.
Whether you enter contests as hobby or are an ‘extreme sweeper’, take the time to read these sweepstakes tips and learn how to save time entering contests, where to find giveaways online and important online safety information.
Narrow down the things you would like to win. If you can’t take time out of work to take a vacation, then do not enter this type of contest unless there is a cash option. Choose sweepstakes that have prizes that you will be able to use or sell for cash if you do not want to keep it.
Set up an email account just for entering contests. This way you will not lose a “you are a winner” or “daily entry reminder” email in the midst of all your other emails. You can get a free email address on yahoo.com, aol.com or gmail.com. Make it easy to access and check your email at least once a day.
Download an app that fills out forms automatically such as RoboForm. You will be able to enter contests more quickly as your basic information will automatically fill in without extra typing. (Make sure you are using a secure password app to protect your information. RoboForm works by filling in your data on almost any web form. While it is deemed safe and used by Fortune 500 companies and the US governement, nothing is 100% fool-proof.)
What’s your number?Always enter an accurate telephone number on sweepstakes entries. Answer all of your calls — many companies will call using a restricted number. If you don’t answer, you may lose out on a prize.
Be safe online: Do NOT enter any contests where you are require to pay ANY amount of money to enter. There are far too many sweepstakes available that cost nothing to enter and are completely legitimate.
Never enter your social security or bank account information into any entry. You may need to provide proper identification if you win for tax purposes, but this will be done typically by registered mail with proper documents.
Tip: If you win a large prize, such as a car, you will have to pay sales tax on it. Be prepared for that when considering which contests to enter.
What type of online contests and sweepstake are available? There are different types of contests such as instant win, daily entry and one-time entry contests.
Instant win contests are either a one time entry or available for daily play. There are often small prizes offered daily with a final grand prize winner drawn out of everyone who tried for the instant win prizes. Not all daily entry contests have daily prizes but may offer several large prizes at the end of the sweepstakes instead of small daily prizes.
Make sure that if you enter a daily entry contest that you check off the box on the entry for that says, “Remind me to play”. This will prompt a reminder email to be sent to your email every day.
One time entries are easiest because you don’t have to remember to go back. Be patient as many of these sweepstakes run for a longer period of time and will not end for several months.
Enter as many of the contests as you can that have ending dates coming up within the next few weeks. This doesn’t up your odds but it does force you to get it done instead forgetting and having the contest end.
Enter only legitimate contests: If it looks like a scam, asks for a credit card or doesn’t have a contact information available, steer clear. Check back here or subscribe to this page to find updates on the best contests available online.
Set aside time to enter contests each day. Entering contest daily may sound like work, but if you are out of work or could use a cash or merchandise prize, it just might be worth it to take a little time out of your day to enter the sweepstakes that are offering prizes you can use.
