Choke! Choke! Choke!… This may be a phrase we heard a couple of times when Rabbit (played by Eminem) panicked on stage during a rap face-off on the 8 mile movie; but it’s not what this article is about.
Chokers are necklaces that wrap around your neck and were featured as an extension of the alternative collars trend during Autumn-Winter 2011 Fashion Shows. Past collections have been influenced by the 90’s decade so there’s no wonder minimalism got to accessories as well.
Each designer gave a twist on these cute rounded fellows though, some influenced by pure simplicity and some others by ancient history. Remember how gladiators and warriors used to cover themselves in metal armors and gauntlet-like cuffs? Well, this has now evolved and became a must-have trend, no need for a battle to wear them.
The Egyptian Civilization served as inspiration as well, you’ll be seeing a lot of Cleopatra’s metal chokers and bracelets this fall.
Diversity is the best thing that could happen to us shoppers, it’s good to know all these takes on chokers and collar necklaces have different approaches, that way we can choose the ones we like the most. Tory Burch for example offers embellished velvet chokers while Max Azria made them in snakeskin print. Lanvin, Isaac Mizrahi, Michael Kors, Etro and Louis Vuitton stuck to metal and Thakoon presented them in furry strips of blue!
HOW TO WEAR
The 70s trend was a hit in spring and it is still on this cold season together with a new one, the 60s trend. These two decades were iconic and the metal accessories were a major element in those looks. Don’t hesitate to buy at least one metal choker and bracelet: gold, silver, copper, brass, bronze…. It will add a great twist to your party outfits.
For the fierce girl: try pairing cold metal pieces with soft knits, a big furry coat or leather jackets channeling the 90s grunge minimalist look.
And if you’re more into the Chanel, classiness and sophistication wear them with structured coats, tweed jackets or little black dresses. You can’t go wrong with those.
