I had my first true “WOW” moment when watching MTV’s “True Life” this week. I’ve been a fan of the show for a decade (there’s nothing really like it if you’re interested in getting a glimpse into the lives of young people), and I’ve seen a lot on this show.
We all have.
But in the opening teaser for “True Life: I Have a Hot Mom,” 15-year-old Tori is seen in a clothing store with her mother Lacey, who’s getting dressed in the store’s dressing room. Suddenly, she rips back the curtain and comes out in a skimpy hot pink bikini, showing off cleavage that would make Dolly Parton immediately become an anti-plastic surgeon advocate.

It was the first time I stood up when watching this long-running series and said “WOW!” so loudly it likely awoke the neighbors. And it wasn’t an excited “WOW” moment. It was a shocking “WOW” moment, a what-kind-of-doctor-would-perform-that-surgery “WOW.”
This week’s “True Life” could’ve just as easily been called “True Life: My Mom Needs Attention” or “True Life: I’m Masking Some Serious Childhood Pain.”
On the episode, Tori pleaded with her mother to dress more appropriately (you know, like a “mom”), but Lacey seemed more interested in the attention men gave her than the concerns of her own daughter.
It eventually led to the funniest line of the episode, with Tori accompanying her mother to the plastic surgeon’s office because she wanted an even bigger bust line.
“You’re gonna die,” Tori said in her most serious, deadpan voice.
You couldn’t help but chuckle.
You also couldn’t help but feel sorry for Tori, a young girl with more maturity and perspective than a mother twice her age. And luckily, by the end of the episode, Lacey heeds her daughter’s advice and buy’s clothes that, you know, actually fit.
