Erie County, NY – Yesterday afternoon, officals arrested two individuals in their early 20’s for nearly starving their Pit bulls to death.
Santford Banks, 22, and Alexandra A. Johnson, 21, were arrested by the Buffalo Police and charged with two counts each of animal cruelty by SPCA Senior Animal Cruelty Investigator, Michael Armatys.
The plight of the emaciated dogs was discovered after the property manager at 170 Dewey Avenue in Buffalo made the horrific discovery.
Both dogs were starving, living in squalor and one dog was passing blood.
At the time that the Erie County SPCA posted their press release, one of the dogs was in such unstable condition that they were unsure if he would survive the night.
The dog had no body temperature, low blood glucose and appeared to be in shock.
From the SPCA,
He is covered in feces and urine, has open pressure sores over his body and legs, and has questionable bruising and burns on his ears. “We are administering fluids at the moment and he seems to be responding…he finally is conscious enough to try to take some food from my hand…but he is in very poor condition.
Ironically, the other dog, who was not as far gone as the brindle dog who was near death, was named “Miracle” by her neglectful former owners.
Miracle is also emaciated, but she was able to stand and did register a body temperature. She seems to be somewhat more stable than her companion.
The SPCA shared this about the dogs’ owners,
“The former owners had no explanation as to why they allowed the dogs to starve,”
Both individuals are being held at the Erie County Holding Center.
Perhaps while they are there, they will have time to try to come up with some semblance of an explanation for the cruel neglect of their two dogs.
Sadly, no explanation can excuse such blatant neglect – there is no reason to cause such blatant suffering.
