On the heels of an extremely popular flashback episode, Vampire Diaries Disturbing Behavior welcomes Stefan back to Mystic Falls. But of course, going home isn’t that simple or that easy. This week answered some questions, brought some familiar faces back into the forefront and had Damon delivering some of those fabulous lines he’s so famous for.
The episode opens with Klaus, Stefan and Rebekah still in Chicago. They’re shopping for new clothes for Rebekah who seems to be having a bit of trouble adjusting to the current fashions and music. Klaus is short on patience and she tells him it’s because she lost the one thing he needed to get answers from the witch. She asks Stefan if he likes the dress but isn’t satisfied with his answer. She says she can always tell when he’s lying. She goes back into the dressing room to change and Klaus tells Stefan that’s nice work. Stefan says, “Well, you’re the one that pulled the dagger out of her.” He gets up to walk outside. Standing across the street watching for him is Katherine.
Elena is busy making chili to take to the Lockwood party while Damon lectures her about how many other people will have brought chili. She tells him that it’s an old family recipe.
“Yeah, I know. I knew your old family. They made sucky chili.”
Damon and Elena are obviously flirting. Alaric notices something is up and asks Damon just why he is there. Damon thinks that Elena is going to break and that she’s in denial about her emotions. She says she isn’t, but Damon points out that she’s still wearing the necklace that Stefan gave her, a symbol of their unbreakable bond. Elena is taken aback.
Stefan wants to know what Katherine is doing in Chicago. He tells her if Klaus finds out that she’s there, she’s dead. Katherine asks him if the necklace that Klaus is looking for is the one he gave to Elena. Stefan is ready to end the conversation but Katherine wants to know what he’s up to. He says that Klaus doesn’t know where theh necklace is and he just has to keep it that way. She tells him that he isn’t the diabolical type, whatever he’s planning isn’t going to work. She warns him that Klaus is smarter than all of them and tells him that Rebekah will ruin him.
Jeremy is sleeping when he turns to see Anna laying in his bed. He starts and jumps out of the bed when she says his name. He launches into a tirade about her continued appearances and short messages while all Anna wants to know is if he can hear here. She’s been trying to get him to hear her for days. He was dreaming about her. He can’t believe that she’s actually there.
Elena opens the door to a very bubbly Caroline who says she’s come bearing gifts. She steps into the house and Bonnie pops into the doorway. Jeremy rushes down the stairs to see her. They kiss, but when they hug, Jeremy sees Anna in the mirror over Bonnie’s shoulder.
Sheriff Liz Forbes is catching Damon up on the situation with Caroline and Bill. She’s been keeping Bill in the cell to make sure the vervain is out of his system so Damon can compel him. Damon asks if she wants him to just kill him, but Liz says he’s Caroline’s father. Just because she and Damon are on good terms doesn’t mean she’s an advocate of his lifestyle. Damon is is he usual cocky self.
Is that what you told him when you two got divorced?
Liz tells Damon to double-check Bill for vervain before she compels him. Bill is surprised that Liz brought another vampire into the situation. Liz says it’s the best thing for all of them. Damon says he’s heard that Bill is into daddy/daughter vampire torture. He insists he was trying to help her.
Well, if there is anyone who doesn’t need help, it’s your annoying, control freak of a daughter.
Damon bites Bill and takes a bit of his blood to verify that his blood is vervain-free. He asks Bill just why he thinks that he can change the basic nature of a vampire. He tells Damon that the mind is a powerful tool that can be trained and retrained if you’re strong enough. Damon says he happens to love mind control. He compels Bill to leave town completely and remember nothing except that he came to take his daughter back to school shopping.
Stefan returns to Gloria’s and finds Rebekah and Klaus waiting for him there. No luck with the necklace yet, but Rebekah offers herself for use in the locator spell since she wore the necklace for so long.
Bonnie, Caroline and Elena are chatting while they make the final preparations for the party, pouring the chili into a crockpot. Bonnie’s had a boring summer with the “normal” side of her family and Caroline would kill for a normal family. Caroline asks when Elena learned how to cook and she says that Damon helped. When they question her about him being around so much, Elena says he’s just trying to be a good friend. She cries out suddenly and Caroline thinks she’s splashed her with the hot chili, but it’s Elena’s necklace.
Gloria says that she can sense something. Elena says the necklace burned her and starts to take it off. Caroline says maybe it’s a sign that she shouldn’t wear it. If she’s going to be cooking without Stefan… Bonnie asks to see it. Gloria continues to chant as Bonnie reaches for the necklace. As soon as her hand makes contact sparks fly and they both drop it. Gloria looks at Stefan and announces that she’s found it.
Rebekah wants to know where the necklace is but Gloria says it doesn’t work like that. She saw a girl with her friends, she’ll have to dive back in to get the details and that will take some time and space. Stefan suggests they come back later, he’s hungry anyway. he tells Klaus he’ll let him pick who they eat. Gloria is obviously unsettled.
The Lockwood party is in full swing when Bonnie shows up with a grimoire. She’s going to do an identification spell to try and figure out what’s going on with the necklace. Caroline wants to know if Elena is switching Salvatores. She wants to know what the deal is with Damon. She tells Elena if her own father couldn’t change her, no one is changing Damon. Suddenly the necklace is floating in the air over the book. It has its own magic.
Damon was right, all the founding families are represented by chilies. He tells Alaric that founder’s parties are just an excuse for the council to gather in back rooms and plot against vampires. Alaric tells him to take a beat with Elena. He thinks whatever they have going on is a bad idea. He’s supposed to be watching out for Elena. Liz appears and whisks Damon off for the council meeting.
Klaus and Stefan are finishing up their meal. Rebekah is complaining because her girl is dead and now she’s bored. They’re trading jabs at each other. Rebekah wants to know why they’re being so mean, Stefan used to love her. Stefan says Klaus is no picnic either. He’s only been with him one summer and he feels like he wants to blow his head off. Stefan drops the body of his victim to the ground and says he has to go. When Rebekah asks about it, Klaus says he’s gone to write a name on a wall.
Jeremy goes into an empty room at the Lockwood mansion and calls for Anna. He tells her that he got distracted before and she asks why he hasn’t told Bonnie that he’s seeing her. She tells him that what’s going on is a push-and-pull. She’s on the other side, trying to push through to him and when he reaches out to her, it pulls her through from the other side. She says she’s all alone there. When he says he sees Vicky, she feels a darkness and when she tries to tell him not to listen to Vicky, something happens like she’s trying to push her out. she warns him not to let Vicky through. She touches Jeremy’s hand, then apologizes, saying she knows that he can’t feel it, but Jeremy asks her to do it again.
Stefan returns to Gloria’s alone. He wants to know what she saw, but Gloria says it’s what she heard that’s interesting. The girls with the necklace were talking about him. She didn’t tell Klaus because she wouldn’t help him with anything. The necklace is a talisman from the original witch herself. Stefan says he can’t help her, but Gloria warns him to not be difficult. When she threatens to tell Klaus what a liar he is, Stefan tries to attack her, but she stops him and drops him to the ground with a spell.
Gloria has Stefan shirtless, laid out on a table surrounded by candles. She’s holding him there with a paralysis spell. She slices both his arms open to let his blood drip into bowls at his side. She tells him that witches now are into new age, but she’s more of the old school voo doo. She is releasing his essence, his spirit, so that she can make a connection. He isn’t going to have to tell her anything. She’s using herbs too, a mixed bag, but her personal favorite is vervain.
Liz tells the council that there haven’t been any incidents since spring. Carol Lockwood asks if anyone else has anything to add. Damon says he thinks they’ve made it through the worst. Only Liz, Carol and Damon are left in the room when Bill comes in. He asks them if they think that everyone on the council is clueless or just stupid.
Bonnie has covered Jeremy’s room in candles and piled grimoires in his floor. She asks him to help her go through them for references to precious metals or necklaces. He wants to know why she doesn’t just ask the dead witches. She tells him that they cut her off when she brought him back from the dead. They warned her that there would be consequences. She didn’t want to tell him because she didn’t want him to feel weird about it. He tells her that she didn’t do anything wrong and quickly changes the subject when Bonnie says Elena told her he’s been having a hard time since then. He picks up one of the oldest grimoires and Anna appears behind Bonnie. She warns him that the darkness is there and suddenly the grimoires catch fire. Bonnie is able to put them out with a spell.
Gloria says that she’s impressed with Stefan, he has discipline. She gets more vervain in her hands and tells him to just let it go as she puts her hands on his chest. She begins to have visions of Elena. She can see that he loves her, that there is a lot of darkness and guilt there, he’s done so much just to keep her away from Klaus. She gets a vision of Elena at the ritual and realizes that she’s the doppleganger. She’s supposed to be dead and that’s why Klaus can’t make hybrids. She giggles with smug satisfaction, but only for a moment. It’s time for that unlikely ally the synopsis mentioned. Katherine pops in and stabs Gloria before she has a chance to do anything with her revelation.
Elena tells Caroline that Stefan never mentioned where he got the necklace. They’re walking through the Lockwood mansion when Alaric joins them. Elena asks where Damon is and Caroline offers her opinion.
Probably off somewhere doing bad things to good people. Consider me the honestly police.
Caroline suddenly sees her dad and heads upstairs to avoid him. Damon catches up to Alaric and Elena on the front lawn. He tells them that he’s been managing Bill Forbes. He’s impervious to compulsion and threatened to out Damon. He wants to control the council and put vervain in the town’s water supply. Elena says that might be a good idea, something to help keep Damon in check now that Stefan isn’t around. Damon says he should have killed Bill that morning. Elena protests that he’s Caroline’s dad.
Yeah, and when I kill him she’ll have one more parent than we do.
Alaric tries to stop Damon. He tells him that he’s repeatedly killed his buzz today and advises him to step aside. Alaric isn’t going to give up that easily. Damon looks down, sees the ring on Alaric’s hand and tells him it’s his temporary funeral before snapping his neck and leaving him on the lawn.
Stefan is cleaning up at Gloria’s with Katherine. She says she’s been thinking about his plan. Klaus is never going to trust him so he needs to go for the sister, she loves him. He should bond with Klaus, make her feel left out and she’ll only want him more. She can’t figure out why he’s doing this other than to keep Klaus away from Mystic Falls. Stefan asks why he should trust her but she points out that she did just save him. He tells her that he knew Klaus and Rebekah back in the 1920’s and they were running from someone who scared them, a hunter. He wants to know why an Original vampire, who cannot be killed, would be a afraid of a hunter. Katherine says if he’s going to make a move against Klaus, she wants in.
That’s good. It’s good to want things, Katherine.
Tyler returns home from football practice and is quite surprised to find Caroline on his bed. She’s there hiding out from her dad. Tyler asks if she wants him to go beat him up but she says no, she bought him the shirt he’s wearing and it was really expensive. Through it all, he’s still her dad. They begin to joke and kiss. Just as things are getting hot and heavy, Caroline’s phone rings. She says she’s only answering in case it’s a friend emergency and Elena says it is an emergency, as she stands over Alaric’s body on the lawn.
Damon finds Bill back inside having a drink. He asks how he was able to withstand the compulsion. Bill says he tried to warn him. It’s a skill he’s been honing for decades and Damon’s technique is a little lazy. Damon wants to know why he doesn’t just expose them all to the council. Bill says he isn’t going expose his own daughter to those morons. He knew what he was risking when he decided to stay in town, but he figured Damon’s not self-destructive enough to kill the sheriff’s ex-husband.
That makes you the third person to underestimate me today.
Damon attacks, but doesn’t go for the kill. He says he’d almost forgotten how good blood tastes when it’s fresh. Bill asks if he’s going to kill everyone who discovers his secret. Damon says he isn’t going to kill him, then goes for another bite. Caroline rushes in at vampire speed and knocks Damon to the wall the throws him through the door. She forces her father to drink some of her blood to heal him then goes back to fighting Damon. He manages to get Caroline by the throat and tells her that he’s stronger. She counters that she’s angrier, and quickly gets her point across. Elena walks in to find Damon on the floor and Caroline and her father gone.
Elena tells him that he can’t do this anymore. Not in this town, not around her. She doesn’t want him to be the monster that other people think he is. Damon says that he’s sorry to disappoint her, but he’s a vampire. Elena yells at him, that doesn’t mean he has to act like one.
I am not Stefan. How ’bout you stop trying to turn me in to him.
Jeremy is washing up in the bathroom and Bonnie says she’s going to clean up the ashes in the bedroom. Anna appears to him and he closes the door, turning the water back on so Bonnie can’t hear their conversation He tells her that she has to stop. She says she only came to warn him. Anna asks if he hasn’t told Bonnie about her because he doesn’t want Bonnie to know still cares about her. Jeremy says he can’t do this right now. Anna begs him not to, but he shuts her out.
Jeremy goes back into the bedroom and tells Bonnie that he was lying when he said that nothing was wrong. Something happened when she brought him back to life. As Jeremy is telling her, Anna is in the background, begging Jeremy not to shut her out but he can’t hear her. She’s all alone.
Stefan is back in the warehouse with the caskets filled with Klaus’s dead family members. He’s just about to open one when Rebekah walks in. She says that Klaus has gone to check on the witch. She says the family cargo is dreary and Stefan asks why she doesn’t just undagger them. She says Klaus would hunt her down and kill her. She hated him for a long time, but it was exhausting. Stefan says they were on the run when he met them, she says that was also exhausting. He asks who they were running from. He says the last night he saw them, there was a man looking for them and Klaus seemed afraid, something he would not have expected. Rebekah says that no one in this world is truly fearless, not even Klaus. He asks who the man was, but she says she can’t. Stefan says he’s sorry, to forget that he asked.
Rebekah says that Klaus told her about the girl he loved, the girl who died. He told her that Stefan is only with him because Klaus saved his brother. She thinks he secretly admires that about Stefan, that he’d sacrifice anything for family. Stefan turns to walk away and Rebekah grabs him, kisses him. She asks him if he’ll ever be able to love anyone the way he loved that girl. He says maybe one day. Rebekah says that she can always tell when he’s lying, his kiss gave him away. Klaus comes in announcing that Gloria is gone, they need to find another witch. Rebekah tells him that something is wrong, she can sense that Stefan isn’t with them. Klaus doesn’t give him a chance to explain.
Back at the Salvatore house the next morning Damon is mixing drinks, one for himself and one for Alaric. It took longer for him to come around this time. Alaric is understandably angry that Damon killed him.
Caroline tells Elena that she isn’t going to say she told her so, but she did tell her, so. Elena says that she and Damon were both right, she was trying to change him, but he’s going to have to change to be a part of her life. Caroline goes for the blunt approach. Damon has gotten under Elena’s skin and she needs to just admit that she’s attracted to him. Elena says that she can’t, if she did, if she thought it for just a second, what would that say about her?
It says you’re human, Elena.
The see Caroline’s dad going to his car and she decides to go over and talk to him this time. He tells her he’s heading back home before someone kills him. He thanks her for coming to his rescue. As he starts to leave, Caroline tells him that she’s going to be okay.
You’re a vampire, sweetheart. I don’t think you’ll ever be okay again.
Alaric is meeting with Liz and Carol. He wants a place on the council. The Gilberts are a founding family and he’s watching out for them. The council’s job is to look after the people of Mystic Falls. The sheriff’s daughter is a vampire and the mayor’s son is a werewolf, they’re supernatural, so who is looking after the actual people. He isn’t taking no for an answer.
Bonnie is waiting at the grill. Elena shows up and says that Jeremy said she still has her necklace. Bonnie hasn’t gotten it figured out yet, but Elena says she feels weird without it. Bonnie gives it back to her and asks if Jeremy has told her that he’s seeing his dead girlfriends since she brought him back to life. She looks up at the waitress and Elena is suddenly gone.
Elena appears at Damon’s door, but it isn’t Elena. It’s Katherine. It was Katherine at the grill with Bonnie. She asks him if he’s in the mood for a road trip. He says her timing is impeccable, he was told to take a beat. Katherine says she’ll drive. All she’ll tell him about where they are going is that it’s away from Mystic Falls. She holds up Elena’s necklace and tells him to believe her, it’s good.
Stefan comes to among the caskets in the back of a truck. Klaus tells him there’s no need to explain himself. He’s not mad, merely curious. Rebekah thinks that Stefan is holding on to something from his old life so Klaus thought he’d check it out for himself, see what he’s been hiding. He opens up the door of the truck, revealing their location.
Welcome back to Mystic Falls, Stefan.
Klaus has brought Stefan back to find out what he’s up to? There is no way that is ending well. Was anyone else blown away by Katherine’s switch up at the end? She’s’ shown once again that she is not someone to underestimate. Stefan may end up sorry that he didn’t join forces with her when he had the chance.
Vicky wasn’t around this episode but she’s got to be just lurking, waiting for her chance to beg Jeremy to help her. Now that Bonnie knows the truth, will she be able to keep him from making a mistake?
Damon’s heading out of town, by Katherine’s side, just as Stefan returns. Elena does seem to be trading brothers back and forth even if she hasn’t changed her allegiance or given in to her feelings for Damon.
Where do they all go from here?
