Vampire Diaries Smells Like Teen Spirit is all about a new year and a new life.
Elena wakes up at 5:15 to an empty bed. She sees the bite marks on her neck and tries to cover them with makeup. She passes Alaric on the stairs but he’s not interested in small talk. They’re in training. He’s trying to teach Elena to defend herself but she isn’t physically strong enough.
Alaric is worried about her and understands why she’s doing this. Stefan hurt her and she doesn’t want it to happen again. He tells her that the fact she found a way to get out of bed makes her the strongest person he knows and that she can do pretty much anything. She goes back to training.
It’s the first day of senior year. Caroline is forcing an optimistic attitude and trying to make Bonnie and Elena fall in line with her. Elena realizes that she met Stefan the first day of school last year, but she’s putting it behind her. New year, new life.
Damon comes downstairs to find bodies littering the floor and Stefan playing his own twisted version Twister with three other girls. Stefan reminds Damon that the house is his, too. There is a knock at the door and an unexpected arrival, Rebekah. Klaus left her and she intends to stay at the boarding house.
Jeremy finds Bonnie at her locker and wants to know if she’s still mad. She says she’s resigned to the fact she’s sharing space in their relationship with Anna and Vicky. Jeremy’s protest that he hasn’t talked to Vicky in a while isn’t really all that helpful. He says he had to see Anna because Damon needed help. She says she understands, but he loved both of them and didn’t break up with them, they died. She thinks he has the power to decide whether or not he sees them.
Matt pulls into the parking lot and Vicky appears in the passenger seat. He was thinking about their first day of last year. He was worried about seeing Elena after the break up and she ended up meeting a vampire. Vicky says he seems unhappy. He says his life is a lot to deal with alone but he’s glad he gets to talk to her, he misses her. She asks what he’d think if she told him there was a way for her to come back. Just then, Tyler bangs on his door in a strangely good mood.
Katherine is dangling a mouse over Michael, trying to get him to wake up to eat. Damon calls her and she tells him that Michael won’t eat, no matter what she offers. Damon says he needs Michael to kill Klaus so they can “de-ripper-fy” Stefan before he ruins the house. Katherine notices a man visiting a grave in the cemetery and says she’ll give it another shot.
Damon calls Elena at school to check on her and share some information.
Yeah, so, you might not want to come here for a while. We have a new housemate, Barbie Klaus.
He tells her that Klaus left her in the dust when Damon mentioned Michael so she has nowhere to go. Elena asks about Stefan and after giving a facetious answer, Damon pretends he hears the bell and hangs up the phone.
Elena sees Caroline hanging up fliers for the bonfire and tells her that she’ll be there. Tyler pops around the corner and kisses Caroline just as Elena notices blood on his shirt. They rush into the restroom and Caroline tells him that vampire rule 101 is not to wear your breakfast to school. He says it’s from a blood bag that Rebekah got for him. Klaus wanted her to keep a watch on him, his first successful hybrid.
Elena leaves them to work things out on their own and runs into Stefan in the hall. He’s come back to school so that he can keep an eye on Elena. She tells him that she’s late for class and starts to walk away but he grabs her arm to stop her. He says he doesn’t want to be there, but if he doesn’t have a choice in the matter neither does she.
Alaric sees them struggling and tells Stefan to let her go. Stefan pushes him into the lockers and tells him not to get in his way. Elena tells him to stop it and Stefan backs off, saying that he’ll see them both in history.
Elena and Alaric are discussing the situation. She tells him that Klaus compelled Stefan to look after her. She’s one of his assets now that he knows her blood is the only way to create a hybrid. Alaric asks if he’s a bodyguard now. Elena says she doesn’t know what he is, but he’s not Stefan and his being there isn’t good for any of them. They have to do something.
Elena takes her seat as students file into the classroom. Caroline sits on one side of Elena and Stefan makes the guy on the other side of her move. Alaric begins the lesson just as a new student comes in the door and interjects. Alaric asks who she is and she introduces herself.
I’m Rebekah. I’m new and history’s my favorite subject.
Matt is hanging out in the “stoner pit” looking for Vicky. He asks what she meant by a way that she could come back. She explains that right now she can only come back when he’s thinking of her, but there is a way that she could be free of that. She’s got help from the other side. Jeremy steps out the door and speaks to Matt, who doesn’t realize that he could see Vicky.
Jeremy tells Anna that he saw Matt talking to Vicky out in the open. He says he must have started seeing her when he died and came back. Jeremy overheard the whole conversation and repeats it to Anna. Matt asks Vicky who is helping her. She says there is a witch on her side that says there is a ritual, she can do magic from her side to push Vicky over to Matt’s side.
Jeremy asks Anna if Vicky could come back and Anna says if she had a stronger foothold, an anchor. Anna is tethered to Jeremy, he is her only access point to his side. Vicky tells Matt that she would be able to come and go as she pleases without having to rely on him. He says she’ll still be a ghost.
In a town full of vampires, werewolves and witches, I’ll fit right in.
Matt doesn’t like her joking about it. Vicky says he’s still the only one who’ll be able to see her. Anna warns Jeremy that Vicky is bad news, she’s surrounded by darkness. Jeremy says she isn’t a bad person. Anna reminds him that you can’t upset the balance of nature without consequences. If a witch is willing to do this for her, they have no idea what price she’s agreed to pay. Matt gives in and asks her what he needs to do.
Caroline is at cheer practice and someone asks about Dana. Rebekah appears, saying it looks like there’s an opening on the squad. Caroline isn’t thrilled about Rebekah being there. Of course it doesn’t help when she says she’s after Caroline’s spunk, her popularity and maybe even her boyfriend.
Tyler tires of football practice and compels the coach to end practice so they can go get drunk at the bonfire. Caroline warns him that he needs to be more subtle but Tyler has an attitude of invincibility. He says that Klaus has given him a gift. They’re distracted by cheers from the squad as Rebekah shows off her moves. Tyler is impressed and Caroline is definitely not.
Stefan joins Elena running on the track. She turns to run the other direction and bumps into another guy. Stefan pushes him down. Elena asks who he is and he says he’s protecting a human blood bag.
Katherine awakens Michael with the blood of the man from the cemetery. As soon as he wakes up he tells her to get it away from him. She tells him that he needs blood but he insists. Katherine remembers him from the speakeasy in Chicago, 1920’s, when he was looking for Klaus.
Damon walks in on Elena working out and asks her if she’s going to bench-press a vampire. She tells him about her conversation with Stefan at the track. He “helps” her by pushing against her as she lifts the weight, taunting, “C’mon, Buffy.” He asks what her plan is and she tells him that she wants to lock Stefan up, at least until Micheal kills Klaus and the compulsion breaks.
Damon says it won’t matter, Stefan is high on human blood. His humanity is gone this time. Elena begs him to do it for her then, because every time she looks at him she feels like she’s going to break. Damon takes her hand and puts it over his heart. He points out that the sternum is a plate of solid bone. He flips her around so that her back is to him and finds a spot on her back, just below the rib cage and next to the spine.
That’s your way to a vampire’s heart. I’ll do whatever it is you need me to do Elena. No one’s gonna hurt you, especially not my brother.
The bonfire is in full swing. Elena, Alaric and Damon are going over the plan. She’s going to lure Stefan away from the bonfire and Alaric will shoot him. She doesn’t want Bonnie to get involved because she’s afraid that Stefan will hurt her. Caroline is making sure the Forbes cell is all ready. Elena tells Damon that it’s his job to keep Rebekah occupied.
Tyler shows up and they ask him to raid his mother’s vervain supply so they can knock Stefan out. He says they can’t do that because it’s not in Klaus’s best interest. Caroline reminds him that Klaus is the bad guy and asks him why he’s acting like a freaky hybrid slave minion. Damon realizes something is wrong as Tyler jumps to Klaus’s defense. Tyler starts to leave and Damon stabs him with vervain.
Tyler’s been sired. He feels loyal to Klaus because Klaus’s blood created him. It’s rare, but maybe not so much in hybrids. Caroline asks how they can fix him and Damon tells her to get a new boyfriend.
Rebekah runs in to Stefan at the party looking for Tyler. Elena comes over to the keg and fills her cup. Stefan tells her to go easy and she asks him if he thinks she’s going to let a blood addict tell her how to drink.
Matt is all set up to perform the ritual to bring Vicky over to the side of the living. He has a ring of candles set up and a picture of Vicky. She encourages him to focus as he cuts his hand and drops his blood over the picture. He says that he accepts her and the candle flames burn higher then go out. The door slams and he falls backward into Vicky. It worked.
Bonnie is angry that Jeremy went to Anna about Vicky. He tries to explain the situation to her. She says if there is another witch involved he should have come to her first. She’s even more upset when she realizes that Anna is there while they’re talking. She says she’ll go deal with Matt trying to resurrect his dead sister instead.
Vicky is experimenting with her new-found freedom. She says her deal was that the witch would help her do what she needed to. She has to restore the balance, Klaus’s hybrids can’t be allowed to survive. She has to kill Elena because she is the key to creating the hybrids. Matt tries to stop her and she knocks him out with a wrench. She tells him that she’s sorry, but she wants to stay.
Elena is watching the festivities at the bonfire when she notices Stefan watching her. She toasts her cup to him and downs the contents. Damon finds Rebekah off to the side of the party roasting marshmallows. Elena sees them flirting and Stefan asks her if she’s jealous. They argue and she tells him she’s leaving.
Matt comes to and calls Bonnie. He tells her what happened. Vicky is at the bonfire. Damon makes a smore for Rebekah and she realizes that he’s distracting her. She stakes him with the stick she was using to roast marshmallows.
Tyler comes to in his father’s study asking how he got home. Caroline explains to him that he’s been sired. He’s being controlled by Klaus’s needs, acting like the old Tyler. He apologizes and tells her that he doesn’t want to be that guy. He promises to be careful.
Everything I like about me, is you.
Elena is lying on the bleachers talking about the constellations. Stefan tells her that she’s drunk and needs to go home. She taunts him about being the fun police and climbs over the side of the bleachers. She acts like she’s going to fall and catches herself twice, then let’s go. Stefan catches her just before she hits the ground and Alaric shoots him in the back.
Alaric puts Stefan in the back of the SUV and he and Elena get in. Matt is pacing in the school and Bonnie is trying to figure out how to send Vicky back. Alaric kicks a gasoline can as starts to get into the truck. Vicky is watching and drops a lighted joint, igniting the trial of gasoline and the truck with Stefan and Elena inside. Elena can’t get the door to open.
Bonnie has a grimoire. She says she’s found spell to block whatever magic is helping Vicky. She prepares and cuts Matt’s hand. Stefan wakes up and kicks the rear hatch off the truck. Bonnie begins to chant and suddenly Vicky is sucked into the room with Matt. Bonnie tells him that she’s still there because of him. Vicky begs him not to make her go but he says he has to. Neither of them wanted to be alone anymore, but he has to let her go. He tells her goodbye and she’s gone.
Alaric gets Elena out through the back of the truck but she won’t go without Stefan. Just as they get far enough away the truck explodes.
Damon is applying first aid to Elena’s wounds. She mentions how well he played the part with Rebekah and he says he thought she was too drunk to notice. Elena says she was faking most of it. The tension between them is palpable.
Caroline and Tyler are getting dressed in the study. He says she’s always running out on him and she tells him he has to earn the over-nighter. She leaves and Rebekah appears with a present for Tyler, a young woman already compelled, bitten and bleeding. Tyler isn’t able to resist.
Michael apologizes to Katherine for his outburst and tells her that he’s been denying himself human blood for as long as he can remember. She tells him that she woke him because she thought he could kill Klaus but she thinks she was mistaken. He asks her to unchain him and assures her that he can kill Klaus, and he will. Katherine frees him and he tells her that he doesn’t feed on living things. She asks what he eats and Michael pulls her down into the casket with him, feeding on her.
Elena tells Alaric it’s okay if he wants to be friends with Damon again, she thinks he misses him. Stefan tells Elena and Alaric that they got him tonight, but Elena needs him. He’ll always protect her. Stefan asks why Elena didn’t let him die in the fire. She says it’s because she has hope, she knows who he really is and she’s not giving up. Stefan asks if she has any idea how pathetic that makes her. She tells him that it makes him strong then punches him, releasing the stakes into him.
Jeremy is leaving a message for Bonnie asking her to stop dodging his calls. Anna tells him that she shouldn’t be there, he shouldn’t be thinking about her when he’s calling Bonnie. He’s confused, he doesn’t know what he’s doing. He doesn’t think he can stop thinking about her and she says that she can’t stop thinking about him either.
Anna puts her hand up in front of Jeremy again. When he puts his hand up, they both feel it and they’re able to hold hands. Damon is rolling up one of the rugs in the hall when something zips by him and breaks a vase. He thinks it’s Stefan and fusses at him as he goes to survey the damage. Suddenly Damon is flipped through the air and Mason Lockwood is standing over him, back from the dead.
Looks like Matt’s little ritual unleashed more than just Vicky!
