The Vampire Diaries returned to CW 11 in Queens at 8PM Thursday with the season 3 premiere, “The Birthday.” Away from Mystic Falls, Klaus and Stefan were busy doing their own thing while the others were busy trying to find the missing Salvatore brother.
In Tennessee, Klaus had Stefan kill two girls after getting Ray’s location. Back in Mystic Falls, Alaric has been staying on the couch, Caroline was passing along information of animal attacks from her mother to Elena, and Jeremy was working at the Grill, still seeing his ghost exes. Elena brought the information about the attack to Damon, who was skeptical but said he’d check it out. Matt made Jeremy switch sections so he wouldn’t have to serve Caroline and Tyler, who awkwardly agreed them dating would be crazy.
Klaus and Stefan caught up with Ray, and Klaus asked for his pack’s location because he wanted to create more hybrids. They may not have been able to compel him, but they could get the answers another way. Meanwhile, Damon and Alaric followed up on a “half-lead” from Andie and found the dead girls. Damon knew it was his brother’s work. As Damon was cleaning up his brother’s mess, they discovered they were dealing with werewolves. Tyler brought up the fact that Damon may not want to find Stefan so badly since he wants Elena for himself.
Meanwhile, thanks to some compelling by Stefan, he could do some torturing of Ray to get his pack’s location. Stefan convinced Klaus to let him take care of Damon being on their trail. Back at the Salvatore house, Damon had a birthday gift for Elena—her necklace—before escorting her down to her party. When Matt found Jeremy getting ready to smoke, he spilled about needing to chill since he was seeing things and not telling anyone. Elena saw them and told Alaric to talk to Jeremy since he looked up to him. Andie was leaving work for the party when Stefan showed up.
Matt found Caroline watching Tyler and his date and said the reason they hadn’t talked was because Caroline was always with Tyler. When the werewolf joined them with his date, Caroline compelled her to leave. Damon left to pick up Andie, leaving Alaric to hold the fort down. When Elena wanted to leave, Caroline told her she couldn’t just let her life pass her by while she kept looking for Stefan. Her birthday wish was to know he’s alive. She found everything Damon had been hiding from her. She called him, but he avoided her questions and hung up as he looked for Andie at the news station. He came face-to-face with Stefan, who told him to stop following him. He made Damon watch Andie fall to her death and repeated his order to let him go before leaving.
Getting his car to give Matt a ride, Jeremy saw Vicki and she said, “help me,” before seeing Anna standing in front. He decided they should walk. Tyler found Caroline obviously in a bad mood and said she would just need to say something if he shouldn’t be dating. They ended up kissing in the middle of the party, and he led her away. Elena confronted Damon about what he was hiding, and he told her he was tracking Stefan’s victims. Stefan wasn’t coming back in her lifetime.
Matt had heard Jeremy say Vicki and questioned him about what he was seeing exactly. He confessed to seeing her, and Matt said he did too since he missed her so much (just not the same thing). Jeremy blamed it on his head being messed up. Ray had given Klaus his pack’s location, but the hybrid had plans for him and forced him to drink his blood before snapping his neck. Stefan returned and said he didn’t care about anything anymore, something Klaus didn’t quite believe.
Elena got home to find Alaric packing up. He told her he wasn’t a role model and couldn’t quite pull himself together away from school. He said she could do everything better without him and left. Meanwhile, Caroline and Tyler had given into their desires. Damon began tearing apart Stefan’s room, while his brother stepped outside the bar and called Elena. He didn’t say anything, but she knew it was him. She told him to hold on to the fact that she loved him. Caroline left Tyler sleeping, but his mother caught her downstairs and shot her with tranquilizers.
