There is some fantastic advice in Vampire Diaries The End of the Affair…If you can’t handle it, then don’t ask. This week’s episode was filled with a lot of history and answers to questions that viewers and characters have been asking. Most of it was not pleasant and some very hard to handle.
Damon is pouring himself a drink when the phone rings…it’s Katherine. Damon gives her an update on what’s been going on in her absence.
Well, Stefan’s still Klaus’s little prisoner and Elena still thinks she can save him and no one’s thought about you since you left.
Katherine isn’t willing to give up her location, but she does having something to offer…a clue to Stefan’s location.
Klaus and Stefan pull up in Chicago. Klaus says it’s the scene of his grand ripper days but Stefan has blacked out most of it. He remembers a lot of blood and a lot of partying, but the details are blurry. Klaus says the details are what makes it legendary.
Flashback to Stefan in the back of car in 1920’s Chicago feasting on his date. He takes the flower from her hair from his lapel, wipes his mouth and heads back inside. Stefan’s clearly a regular as the singer, Gloria, notes his arrival and he tells her to save him a dance. He reaches for the last drink on the tray of a passing waiter and a blonde woman grabs it before he can.
She leans in as though to kiss Stefan, but licks the corner of his mouth instead.
You’re still wearing your date. She’s lovely.
Stefan asks who she is, but her only reply is a finger to her lips before she walks off. They return to present day. Stefan wants to know why he is still with Klaus. The hybrid plan failed. Klaus says they’re going to see his favorite witch because she might be the only one who can help them.
Elena rolls over in bed and snuggles into Damon’s chest. He speaks, she realizes that it’s him and freaks out. Damon says he knows she was dreaming about him, it explains the drool. She tells him to get out and he says he’ll go get Stefan by himself then. Elena wants to know how he knows that Stefan is in Chicago.
It came to me in a dream. I was naked, you would have loved it. Start packing…Let’s just say he’s not there to meet Oprah.
Caroline is still being held captive by her father in the vampire cell. He wants to know how she’s able to walk in the sunlight. once he gets the answer they’ll get on with it. She motions toward her ring and he removes it. He tells her that her ancestors built the cell and people figured it was for unruly prisoners at the jail. The ventilation system pumps in vervain, she’s sitting in a reinforced steel containment chair and there is one more feature. He shows her a bag of blood before demonstrating that third feature and opening the window to cover her in sunlight.
Blood controls you, sweetheart. This is how I’m gonna fix you.
Damon and Elena are on the road. He tells her that he hopes they find Stefan because he’d hate for her necklace to be the last memento of him. He hands her Stefan’s diary and tells her to read it to prepare herself but she refuses, saying it would violate his privacy. Stefan reads her a few lines and she grabs it from his hand, reading it herself.
Stefan is back in the club with a group of other men when the blonde from earlier comes over and tells them to keep it down. She’s come to listen to Gloria. Stefan asks her name and she tells him that he has to earn it. Back to present day, Klaus and Stefan are walking into the same club. Gloria remembers Stefan. She’s such a powerful witch she’s been able to slow down the aging process. Klaus sends Stefan off to fetch them drinks from the bar.
Klaus wants to know what he’s doing wrong with the hybrids. Gloria says that every spell has a loophole but with a curse that old, she’d need the original witch, who happens to be dead. Gloria says in order to contact her, she’ll need Rebekah. Klaus says she’s a bit preoccupied but Gloria says she has what she needs. Stefan comes out from behind the bar holding a picture of him with Klaus form the 1920’s.
Caroline’s mother is home, leaving a message for her when Tyler shows up at her door. Meanwhile Bill is still torturing Caroline with the sun. She’s pleading with him to stop, telling him that she has adapted and can handle the urges. He tells her that he’s conditioning her to associate vampirism with pain. In time, the thought of human blood will make her able to repress her vampire instincts completely. She tells him that he can’t change who she is, but he insists that he can and tells her to remember the feeling as he opens the window again.
Damon and Elena are at Stefan’s old Chicago apartment. Damon tells her that there used to be a girl’s high school around the corner but it shut down due to attendance problems. They go inside and he pulls open a hidden cabinet behind another. The shelves are filled with bottles of alcohol and the interior wall is covered with a list of names…Stefan’s victims. Elena reacts by asking Damon what he was up to back then, paving the way for women’s liberation?
I was around. Chicago’s a big city. Stefan was a cocky ripper douche but I could avoid him and still indulge in a few Daisy Buchanans of my own.
He leaves her there to come up with a plan while he goes to find Stefan.
Stefan is confused, he wants to know why Klaus never told him that they knew each other. Klaus is on a mission and has no patience for Stefan at the moment. He tells him that they didn’t get off to a brilliant start, he hated Stefan. They return to 1920’s Chicago. Stefan is feeding on a woman in the club when the blonde woman joins him. They kiss over the body of their current meal. He notices the necklace that she’s wearing and she tells him that a witch gave it to her. It’s the same necklace that Elena wears now.
Klaus arrives and tells the blonde, Rebekah, that it’s time to go. She doesn’t take kindly to it and Stefan starts to go after him. She tells him to stop, Nik is stronger than he looks. Turns out that Rebekah is his sister. Back to modern day, Stefan is surprised to learn that he knew another one of the Originals. Klaus opens one of the caskets to reveal Rebekah. Stefan doesn’t recognize her. Klaus removes the dagger from her chest and tells her that it’s time to wake up.
Klaus is being impatient waiting for Rebekah to wake up. Stefan uses the time to try and find out why Klaus is keeping him around. Klaus tells him that he does have many useful talents, in fact, he learned some of his favorite tricks from Stefan. They flashback to a table in the club, Klaus questioning Stefan on what makes him good enough for Rebecca, a pure vampire. Suddenly a man approaches the table, demanding to know where his wife is.
Stefan calls the man’s wife Lila over, she is the woman that he and Rebekah were both feeding from earlier. He compels the man to sit down with them. Stefan slits the woman’s wrist and fills the glass with her blood then sends her off to bandage her self up. He forces the man to drink his wife’s blood, but not before asking his name…Liam Grant.
Back to present day, Klaus tells Stefan he was his number one fan. On their way out, Klaus compels the guard to tell Rebekah to meet them at Gloria’s bar. He tells him to offer her his carotid artery and let her feed until he dies. He tells Stefan that he shared one of his secrets with him and he’s going to prove it to him. They’re going to his old apartment.
Damon shows up in Gloria’s bar. He tells her if he’d known she was going to age like this he’d have stuck around. She tells him that she always did like him better but his brother is still running in the wrong crowd. She tells him that Stefan and Klaus are out running an errand for her but they’ll be back later tonight. She won’t give up any more information.
You may be cute, but you’re still a vampire.
Elena is reading Stefan’s journal entries from 1922. Lexie has found him. In 1924 she is giving him animal blood. In 1935 the cravings are there but it’s easier and Lexie has moved on to trying to make him laugh. Elena hears something in the hallway. Stefan and Klaus are about the enter the apartment.
Klaus immediately senses that someone has been there but Stefan dismisses it, saying that people probably break in all the time. Elena is hiding with the alcohol, right in front of the list of Stefan’s victims. Klaus said he couldn’t figure out why Stefan wanted to know Liam Grant’s name until he told him his secret, his special ritual. He’d write the name down and relive the kill, over and over again.
Klaus crosses the room and opens the secret cabinet where Elena is hiding. He asks Stefan if he believes him now and Stefan goes to look. He sees Elena and they stare at each other for a moment before Stefan tells Klaus to look what he found. For a moment, Elena thinks he is going to give her up, but he turns around with a bottle of 1918 single malt. Klaus says they’ll go find someone to pair it with and Stefan closes the door, leaving Elena safe in her hiding place.
Elena is hiding with a vervain dart in hand when Damon returns to the apartment. Damon says that he’s had an hour to process what a bad idea it was to leave her there alone and move on, but he’s obviously shaken by her close call. He tells her to get ready because he knows where Stefan is going to be. He’ll distract Klaus and let her deal with Stefan.
But you’re gonna have about five minutes tops before that hybrid freak rips my heart out so please, tell me you can do this.
Klaus and Stefan have returned to the bar without Rebekah. Stefan thinks that Klaus asked him to be his wing man because he liked the way that he tortured innocent people. Actually, Klaus tells him, that is only half of it, Stefan once wanted to be his wing man.
Flashback to the club. Stefan is telling Klaus that his family was just jealous of him because they could never be what he is, a king. They talk about Rebekah and Klaus warns him to be careful. He tells him when she eventually leaves him, not to let his heart do anything stupid. Stefan tells him what a good friend he is. Back in present day, they toast to friendship.
Bill tells Caroline that he sat down and cried when he got the call from Carol Lockwood about her. Caroline insists to him that she can control herself, she doesn’t need to be fixed. He pushes her to resist the urges but she says that she can’t. He tells her this is the only way, otherwise he’ll have to kill her. The shock of those words make her lose some of her control. The sun is gone down so he leaves, saying they’ll try again tomorrow.
There is someone waiting for Bill when he comes out of the cell. Sheriff Forbes holds him at gunpoint. She reminds him that Caroline is their daughter. Despite Bill’s protests that this is what’s best for Caroline, the sheriff sends Tyler in to get her. He breaks the restraints on the chair, puts her ring back on her finger and carries her out of the cell.
So I’m confused, if we were such great friends then why do I only know you as the hybrid dick who sacrificed my girlfriend on an altar of fire?
Klaus answers him by saying that all good things must come to an end. Back to the club in the 1920’s. Stefan and Rebekah are dancing as Klaus watches. Suddenly he senses something just before the entire place is riddled with bullets in a police raid. Stefan and Rebekah hide behind the bar and he realizes the bullets are wooden. Rebekah says he’s here and Klaus comes to get her. She drops her necklace as she runs out.
Klaus stops Stefan before he can follow her. He compels Stefan to forget him and Rebekah until he says otherwise. He thanks Stefan, telling him he’d forgotten what it was like to have a brother, then disappeared. In present day, Klaus tells him that it was better to have a clean slate when they moved on. Stefan says it shouldn’t matter unless they were running from someone. Klaus declares story time over and Stefan sees Damon by the door of the club. He says he needs a real drink and goes outside.
Stefan slams Damon against a car. He’s furious that they’re there. Damon doesn’t think he can decide if he’s bad or good. Stefan tells him that Klaus almost saw Elena, he needs to get her out of Chicago.
She’s not going anywhere until she’s got you checked in to vampire rehab and on the mend. Trust me. I’ve tried.
Stefan says that she is the key to everything and Klaus cannot know that she’s alive. She’s the reason that he can’t create new hybrids and he’s seconds away from finding that out. He says to tell her to go home and forget about him. Damon says to tell her himself.
Damon appears beside Klaus at the bar as Gloria announces last call. Klaus says he sees they’re allowing the riff raff in now and Damon says he’s been called worse. Damon tells Klaus to give him his brother back and he’ll never have to see him again.
Well I am torn. You see I promised Stefan I wouldn’t let you die, but how many freebies did I really sign up for and clearly you want to die, otherwise you wouldn’t be here. So…
Damon says he’s a thrill seeker and Klaus grabs him by the throat.
Stefan tells Elena she shouldn’t be there. He asks what she wants, Damon won’t be able to distract Klaus for long. She touches his face and asks him to come home. She hugs him and tries to stab him with a vervain dart. Stefan grabs her and asks how much clearer he can make it, he does not want to come home.
Klaus lifts Damon up by the throat and begins randomly stabbing him with the wooden pick of the umbrella from his drink. Klaus is angling for his heart. Damon tells him if he wants a partner in crime he should forget Stefan, he’s so much more fun. Klaus throws him to the ground and rips the leg off a chair to stake him. Just as he raises it, Gloria catches it on fire. She tells them to take it outside. Klaus tells Damon he won’t have to negotiate his brother’s freedom because when he does with him, he won’t want to go back.
Stefan tells Elena that Klaus is obsessed with siring the hybrids and the moment that he figures out Elena is alive he’ll know why it isn’t working. Elena begs him to come with her. Stefan says it will never be the same, he’s left bodies scattered from Florida to Tennessee. She tells him that Lexie found him like this before and helped him. He says it took him 30 years to pull himself together. That’s nothing to him, but half a lifetime to her. She has to give up on him.
It’s done. That part of my life is done. I don’t want to see you. I don’t want to be with you. i just want you to go.
Elena is in the car holding her necklace. She tells Damon just to drive.
Caroline is back at home with her mother. She tries to explain to Caroline that she and her father were raised believing certain things and it’s hard to see a different way. Caroline taught her how to do that and one day her dad will be able to do that too. She thanks her mom for believing in her. Tyler comes and climbs in to bed with Caroline, letting her rest her head on his chest. She starts crying, saying that her dad hates her.
Klaus is back in the warehouse, Rebekah’s casket is empty and the guard is dead on the ground. Rebekah jumps out and stabs him with the dagger. They flashback to just after the raid at the club. Klaus is telling her that they’ve been found, they have to leave or die. Rebekah is waiting for Stefan but Klaus tells her he can’t come with them. She’s tired of running and they argue. Klaus tells her to choose. She tells him goodbye, so he stabs her with the dagger. The same dagger he is now removing from his own chest.
He says he’ll let it go because he understands that she’s upset with him. He’s brought her a peace offering…Stefan. Klaus compels him to remember everything. All the memories flash through Stefan’s mind and he seems happy to see Rebekah. Klaus speaks to him. He remembers asking a man to take a picture of him and his brother, the picture from the bar. He remembers that they were friends, Klaus says that they are friends.
Now, on to why Rebekah is there. Gloria says that she knows how to contact the original witch. Rebekah realizes that her necklace is gone. Klaus becomes agitated as he realizes that the missing necklace is what Gloria needs.
Damon is on the phone with Katherine and she still refuses to tell him where she is. As she exits the phone booth, she flashes back to the club, right after the raid. Rebecca’s necklace is on the floor. Katherine watches from the shadows as Stefan bends over to pick it up. Present day Katherine steps out to hail a taxi…in Chicago.
So, Klaus and Stefan go way back. Now it makes sense that Klaus knew so much about Stefan’s ripper days.
Not only is Elena being alive the stumbling block for Klaus’s plan but her necklace is the key to contacting the original witch. Stefan broke her heart and pushed her away to try to keep her safe but it looks like she’s just all tied up in this mess either way.
Poor Caroline! Now she has to worry about her own father coming after her? At least she has her mother and Tyler in her corner now.
Definitely another episode that demonstrates just how expertly these plot lines are woven together.
What was the biggest surprise for you tonight? Do you think Stefan is really done with Elena or was that all show for her safety? How will his memory of Rebekah and his knowledge of where her necklace is factor in? And if Klaus finds Elena, will getting the necklace even matter that much?
