The Vampire Diaries season 3 continued on CW 11 in Queens Thursday night with “The End of the Affair.” Klaus continued to work on his plan, while more of Stefan’s past was revealed.
Katherine called Damon for an update, and he said he wasn’t giving up on Stefan. She knew where Klaus and Stefan were—Chicago, where Ripper Stefan had some fun in the 1920s. Klaus brought them there to see his favorite witch for help with the hybrid problem. Elena woke up to find Damon in her bed with news about Stefan’s location. Meanwhile, Bill still had Caroline captive in a torture chamber designed for vampires and took her ring before exposing her to the sun.
On their road trip, Damon wanted to prepare Elena with Stefan’s journal, and she eventually began reading. In Chicago, Klaus took Stefan to a bar he frequented in the 1920s to see Gloria, a powerful witch who has slowed her aging down. Klaus talked to Gloria about the spell, and she said they needed to contact the dead Original witch and to do that, she needed Rebecca. Stefan found an old photo of himself and Klaus.
Bill was conditioning Caroline associate her vampire side with pain, trying to get her to suppress it completely. In Stefan’s old place, Damon showed Elena a list of his victims, leaving her to go looking in the city. Stefan blacked out plenty in the ’20s, and Klaus told him they got off to a bad start. They met while Stefan was with Rebecca, who turned out to be Klaus’ sister, whom Klaus had with them and revived.
Back in the ’20s, Klaus played overprotective brother and watched Stefan make a man drink his wife’s blood. In the present, Klaus told Stefan they were heading to his old apartment. Meanwhile, Damon found out from Gloria that Klaus and Stefan were running an errand for her and would return. Elena was busy reading Stefan’s journal when she heard Stefan and Klaus. She hid in Stefan’s secret compartment, but Klaus knew about Stefan’s list and opened the wall. When Stefan looked inside, he saw Elena, but grabbed a bottle to show Klaus.
Damon finally returned with new clothes for her. He planned to have her talk to Stefan while he dealt with Klaus. At Gloria’s, Klaus told him he wanted him to be his wingman because he liked how Stefan tortured innocent people and Stefan wanted to be his wingman. In the ’20s, Klaus warned Stefan to be careful about Rebecca because she never did anything halfway. Caroline told Bill she learned to adapt and couldn’t be fixed, but he wanted her to try her best. He held out blood and told her to fight the urge. If he couldn’t fix her, he had to kill her. He locked her up for the night, but Liz was waiting outside. He told her to let him do this, but Liz called Tyler, who went in and freed Caroline, replacing her ring.
In the ’20s, the bar came under gunfire—of wooden bullets. Rebecca knew “he was here,” and Klaus pulled her away. He compelled Stefan to forget him and his sister. Stefan realized he was running fro someone. When Stefan spotted Damon, he followed him outside and told him to get Elena out of Chicago. He explained she was the key to Klaus’ plan failing. However, she was waiting for Stefan. Damon went inside to join Damon at the bar.
Damon’s conversation didn’t exactly go well with Klaus, while Elena tried to get Stefan to come home. She hugged him and went to stab him with a syringe, but he stopped her and said he didn’t want to come home. Meanwhile, Klaus was having fun with Damon, who told him he’d be a much more fun partner-in-crime. Gloria stopped him from staking Damon. Stefan told Elena it would never be the same and told her about the bodies. It would take too long to pull him back together, and he was done with that part of his life. He told her he didn’t want to be with her before walking away.
Damon and Elena headed back home, while Liz gave Caroline blood before telling her that these families had these beliefs for generations. Caroline helped Liz stray from them. Liz left Tyler and Caroline alone, and he comforted her. When Klaus went to check on Rebecca, she stabbed him. In the ’20s, she wanted to be with Stefan, and he told her to choose. She chose Stefan, and he killed her. Klaus removed the knife; she wanted it to hurt more. Klaus brought Stefan in and told him to remember. Rebecca needed her necklace, which was what Gloria needed to contact the Original witch. Katherine ha watched Stefan pick it up in the ’20s. A man questioned him about Klaus and Rebecca, but he said he never saw them before. Katherine hailed a cab in Chicago after getting off the phone with Damon.
