In Vampire Diaries The New Order, Klaus presented Ray’s pack of werewolves with a choice. Either join him and be a part of that new order, or die. Unfortunately, his plans didn’t work out quite that way…
Damon is taking down all the information he’d been using to track Stefan while the news reports about Andie’s death play in the background. Elena shows up, wanting to know why he didn’t tell her about Andie and telling him about Stefan’s phone call. Sheriff Forbes traced it to Tennessee. Damon tells her again that Stefan is gone, but she argues that if that were true, he wouldn’t have called. Damon throws all the information in the fireplace and lights it.
Alaric wakes up in his apartment to someone banging on the door. He assumes that it’s Damon so he’s quite surprised to find Elena there, asking for information about Stefan in Tennessee. He tells her that he’s already checked out of all this. Damon isn’t helping her and Alaric says that’s because this isn’t safe for her. Stefan is off the rails. Elena says that he’s still holding on to his humanity which means that he can still be saved. She says that Stefan would never give up on her so she isn’t going to give up on him. Alaric relents and tells her that they’ve been tracking werewolves.
Stefan is with Klaus, carrying Ray through the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Stefan’s tired of hunting werewolves after doing it all summer. They come upon a pack of werewolves camping in the woods. Klaus introduces himself. They’ve already heard of him, they know that he’s the hybrid.
Carol Lockwood pours herself a morning drink and empties one of the vervain darts she didn’t use on Caroline into the coffee urn. She offers Tyler coffee and tells him if he’s going to bring a girl home she wishes she’d have the tact not to sneak out like a prostitute. She carefully watches Tyler as he tastes his coffee. He doesn’t react by burning, like Caroline did, but he notices that it doesn’t taste right and tells her that the cream must be bad. Apparently Carol is not aware of the Lockwood curse if she was concerned that her son was a vampire. She makes a call to someone named Bill and tells him that she’s gotten herself into a vampire situation.
Jeremy goes to see Matt at work and tells him that he saw Vicky again. Matt seems confused as to why he’d come to him instead of Bonnie. Jeremy says they don’t need help from a witch, they need personal items and it works best when a family member tries to contact them. Matt is reluctant but Jeremy tells him that Vicky asked for help.
Tyler and Elena are talking at the grill. He tells her that there are some werewolves who prefer to gather in places they can enjoy the full moon rather than chaining themselves up…mountains, state parks, deserts. He shows her a map on her phone of a place like that in Tennessee. Tyler figures he owes Elena one because Stefan is only in this mess because he bit Damon. He asks if Elena has heard from Caroline.
Elena tells Alaric that she’s going to hike the Smoky Mountains with our without his help. He’s obviously not enthused about the idea of hunting werewolves on a full moon. She says he’s the one who told her she could handle things on her own now. This is obviously not what he meant. He gives in, but says she’s driving.
Klaus and Stefan are in the werewolf camp. He’s going on about the powers of a hybrid…a werewolf who isn’t controlled by the moon, a vampire who isn’t burned by the sun. Ray awakes, needing human blood to complete his transformation to a vampire. No one volunteers so Klaus picks out one of the men and bites his arm. Stefan holds him down, offering his arm out to Ray. If Ray doesn’t drink the blood, Stefan will, and he doesn’t know when to stop. The human’s werewolf girlfriend tries to save him but Klaus grabs her. He tells her it’s the new order, either join them or die. She says she’d rather die than be a vampire. Klaus tells her that’s the wrong choice, forces her to drink his blood then kills her. He turns to the rest of the pack and asks who is next.
Tyler is playing pool at the grill waiting for Caroline. Matt comes over to refill his coffee and they talk about the fact that Tyler and Caroline are friends. Matt makes an attempt to offer his assistance to Tyler since it’s a full moon and Caroline isn’t around. Tyler takes a sip of the coffee and realizes that something is off. Matt tells him it’s the vervain that Sheriff Forbes has him slip into the coffee from time to time, humans don’t taste it.
Carol Lockwood opens the door to Bill. She tries to make small talk but he wants to get right down to business. She tells him that it’s Caroline, but no one else in the council knows. She’s been putting it together on her own for months. She asks for his advice and says she can’t get her hands dirty here. Bill says she’s a vampire, they do what they have to do.
Alaric and Elena are hiking through the woods. He tells her that the full moon will be rising over the ridge in a couple of hours so that’s where they need to be headed. He gives her a wolfsbane grenade and she gives him John Gilbert’s ring. Alaric is reluctant to take it.
Why don’t you save it for future generations of stubborn, relentless baby Gilberts.
She tells him to borrow it until they survive this. She’d feel bad if she got him killed before happy hour. She starts to ask him why he thinks he is a lost cause as she is suddenly knocked into the water. She turns around to see Damon standing on the shore. He thanks Alaric for the tip. Elena is furious and wants to know why Alaric ratted her out.
You think I’d take you into a mountain range of werewolves on a full moon without backup?
Klaus feeds some of his blood to the human in camp to help him recover enough to provide blood to the other werewolves when they wake up. Ray seems terrified and in pain. All the other werewolves are dead, waiting to awaken as vampires. Klaus says that Ray should be feeling better soon, but that doesn’t seem to be happening. Stefan asks if building an army of hybrid slaves is Klaus’s master plan. Klaus says not slaves, but soldiers, comrades. Stefan asks for what war.
Oh, you don’t arm yourself after war has been declared, Stefan. You build your army so big that no one ever dares pick a fight.
Klaus says he isn’t concerned about keeping them loyal because it’s easy to be loyal when you’re on the winning team. He says that’s something that Stefan will understand eventually. Stefan asks if he’s keeping him around just to watch his attitude adjustment. Klaus tells him that he’ll know why he is keeping him around when he wants him to know. Something is going wrong with Ray. Blood is pouring from his eyes.
Elena is refusing to get out of the water because she says that Damon will make her go home. She says he gave up on Stefan but Damon argues all he did was accept reality. He wants to know what her plan is.
You gonna walk through a campsite of werewolves, roast a marshmallow and wait for Stefan to stop by?
She wants to find him and help him. Damon reminds her that the only thing keeping her safe is the fact that Klaus thinks she’s dead. Damon gives in to her pleading, but says they are out of there before the moon is full and he’s werewolf bait, unless she wants to relive the whole death-bed kissy thing.
Ray is not getting better and Klaus is obviously concerned. The girlfriend of the human, Derek, awakes and Klaus calls him over to feed her. Ray snarls and takes off into the woods. Klaus sends Stefan after him. He bites Stefan and gets away. Before Stefan can trail him he hears Damon and Elena arguing on the path. Stefan tells Klaus that Ray got away and he’s going to need his blood to heal him. Klaus says he’ll heal him as soon as he brings back Ray. All the werewolves in camp are awakening now and those in the last stages of their transformation are beginning to bleed from the eyes just like Ray.
Tyler returns home to confront his mother about the vervain in his coffee. He tells her to skip the part where they pretend they don’t know about the vampires and tell him why. She says it was because he’d been spending so much time with Caroline. She doesn’t want him to be with her because she’s a monster. Tyler realizes that his mother doesn’t know about him or the Lockwood curse.
Damon, Elena and Alaric are still about a mile from the werewolf camp. The sun is about to set but Elena thinks they have time because the moon won’t reach its apex for a while. They come across Ray stumbling through the woods and he attacks Damon. Alaric shoots him and Elena tosses Damon the wolfsbane grenade. It’s enough to take him down for the moment. They realize that he’s a hybrid.
Jeremy and Matt are going through all of Vicky’s belongings looking for personal items to build a stronger connection. Matt finds a picture of them together when he was younger and starts having second thoughts. He tells Jeremy that he needs to leave and lays the picture on the table, face down. Matt hears something and turns around to find the picture sitting up.
They’re chaining and tying Ray to a tree. Elena hands Alaric ropes soaked in the last of the vervain. They don’t have enough to hold him once he turns. Alaric doesn’t think they can make it to the ridge before the full moon. Elena’s plan is to get Ray to talk but they quickly realize that he’s beginning to turn. Elena realizes the danger and says they have to get out of the woods now.
The sun has gone down and Klaus is back at camp. Now that he’s given them all blood, he puts an end to Derek. Derek’s girlfriend circles toward him and he warns her that there is only one alpha in this group. He looks around him and realizes that something is going terribly wrong.
Damon, Alaric and Elena are fleeing through the woods when she falls. Damon yells at her not to move. She looks up, staring into the face of a transformed wolf. Damon takes off and the wolf gives chase. Elena wants to go look for him but Alaric won’t let her. Damon is out there because he told him where they were and they need to get out.
Tyler takes his mother with him to the old Lockwood property. He’s going to show her what is going on rather than tell her. He starts to chain himself up and locks her behind one of the doors. He says Caroline isn’t the monster, he’s a monster. He tells her that it’s a family curse and that Mason was the same. He transforms before her eyes.
Damon is wandering through the woods and hears something behind him. He turns to find Ray in human form. They fight and Ray gets the upper hand. Just as he is about to go in for the bite Stefan appears out of nowhere and rips out Ray’s heart. Stefan wants to know why Damon didn’t understand him when he said not to follow him.
You might want to take that up with your girlfriend. You don’t want her chasing you, I’d stop with the late night phone calls.
Stefan tries to deny that he called her, but Damon doesn’t believe him. He tells him that Elena isn’t going to give up. Stefan says that she has to because he’s never coming back. He tells Damon to get her home and see if he can keep her there this time.
Elena and Alaric are in the car waiting for Damon. Elena says that Damon and Stefan are both out there somewhere and they’re just sitting in the car. Alaric tells her to let the vampires fight the hybrid, zombie mountain man and he’ll keep the human safe. Elena says she thought he was done taking care of people. Alaric tells her to stop, there doesn’t need to be a lesson here. He tells her that she’s a sucker for a lost cause. She tells him that he’s not a lost cause, he’s just lost. And so is she and so is Jeremy. There family is gone and they don’t have anybody, and neither does he. They’re kind of right for each other. Alaric tells her he’s keeping the ring.
Damon shows up at the car. Elena runs to him and asks if he’s okay. She asks if he’s alright and he assures her that he’s fine and bite-free. He tells her to get back in the car. Elena looks up the mountain and almost sees Stefan standing there, watching.
Matt arrives at the Gilbert house and apologizes for earlier. He spent the day going through Vicky’s stuff. He realized that most people didn’t get Vicky, they saw her as trouble, but Jeremy did get her. He saw past that. He’s brought some of her things. Jeremy tells Matt that he doesn’t remember Vicky dying. Elena made them take that memory away from him. Whatever his last moment was with her, he doesn’t have it. Matt says that he doesn’t either. Vicky suddenly appears to Jeremy and says Matt’s name. Jeremy asks how he can help her. She says that she can come back and asks Jeremy to help her come back. Suddenly the back door glass breaks out. Anna is standing there. She tells Jeremy not to trust Vicky.
Stefan returns to camp with Ray’s body. Klaus is sitting among all the dead bodies. Klaus says that they went rabid. He killed some of them and the others just bled out. He can’t understand why it didn’t work.
I did everything I was told. I should be able to turn them. I broke the curse, I killed a werewolf, I killed a vampire, I killed the doppleganger.
Stefan struggles to keep his expression from giving away the fact that the doppleganger didn’t stay dead. Klaus tells him that he looks like hell. Stefan says that last he checked he was dying and Klaus was refusing to heal him. He tells him that he had to take Ray out, he had no choice. He failed Klaus, and he’s sorry. Klaus says it should have worked, then bites his hand and lets the blood run into an empty bottle. He hands his blood over to Stefan to cure the bite. Klaus says they are leaving, it seems that Stefan is the only comrade he has left. Stefan drinks the blood and follows after him.
Elena comes out of the shower to find Damon in her room. He says that he was wrong, which prompts her to ask if he’s drunk. He tells her that he was wrong about Stefan, he isn’t gone. Elena asks if he saw Stefan out there, if he’s okay.
No, he’s not okay, Elena. He’s an insufferable martyr that needs his ass kicked. But he can be saved.
Elena wants to know what happened out there to change his mind. Damon changed his mind because even in his darkest place, Stefan still couldn’t let him die. He figures that he owes him the same in return. He’ll help Elena bring him back, but first, he wants her to answer one question. He wants to know why she suddenly just gave up and wanted to get off the mountain. He argues with her until he gets her to admit that it was because she was worried about him and didn’t want him to be hurt. She asks why he even has to hear her say that she worries about him.
Because when I drag my brother back from the edge and deliver him back to you, I want you to remember the things you felt while he was gone.
He caresses her face and tells her good night. He passes Alaric on the way out as he is carrying his things up the stairs. Alaric asks Elena if she knows what she’s doing with Damon and she tells him that she doesn’t.
Tyler comes to with his mother watching. She tells him that she’ll take care of it. She’ll make sure that nothing happens to Caroline. He thanks her.
Carol calls Bill and tells him that she thinks they made a mistake. Bill tells her not to feel guilty. He says they aren’t human, they’re monsters. His family has been committed to this for almost 150 years. He says he knows what his obligations are and hangs up.
Caroline comes to chained to a chair in a locked room similar to the Salvatore cellar. She hears someone coming and calls out for Mrs. Lockwood. Bill enters the room and says hello to her. Caroline looks up and him and answers…”Daddy”
Once again, this episode was packed with new twists and turns. How long will it take Klaus to figure out that the doppleganger isn’t dead? How does Damon plan to get Stefan back? Will Stefan come back to Elena, or is her heart turning to Damon? What is Vicky up to? What will happen to Caroline now that her father knows that she’s a vampire? This is a series that is fabulous at answering questions while leaving the viewer with just as many for next week. That’s what keeps the fans coming back for more.
Season three is off to a great start with The Birthday and The New Order. What has been your favorite part so far?
