Veg News is a vegetarian lifestyle magazine that focuses on all things current and delicious in the vegetarian and vegan world. This publication provides its readers with some of the basics— food reviews, health tips, recipes—but also frequently highlights people who are making a splash in the food industry. One such duo, a pair of sisters from Los Angeles, was invited to Veg News headquarters in the Mission district in San Francisco.
Sisters Jenny Engel and Heather Goldberg are the founders and owners of Spork Foods, a Los Angeles-based gourmet vegan food company. The sisters were delighted to make the visit and celebrate the release of their new book, Spork Fed. This wonderful vegan cookbook is equipped with scrumptious but simple recipes that even non-vegans can appreciate! Jenny and Heather aim to show people that vegan food can be both creative and delicious. The sisters emphasize the use of local, organic, and sustainable ingredients when making the recipes from Spork Fed.
The variety of recipes in Spork Fed is quite abundant—including appetizers, soups, salads, sides, main dishes, desserts, and brunch—they’ve got it all covered! There are even menu suggestions and a list of reference sources for books on how to live a healthy lifestyle.
At the Veg News book-bash, the sisters mingled with the crowd, while volunteers served up a few of the delectable appetizers from Spork Fed. One of the appetizers served was the southwest black bean and corn mini burger with a smoky paprika cashew cheese. These tasty little bites would have fooled any non-vegan, with their delicious flavor and char-broiled texture.
Another item on the night’s menu was the twice-baked potato with vegan cheddar cheese and chives. These mouthwatering potatoes were perfectly creamy and left you feeling less guilty about eating all that cheese! The last appetizer served at the party was one you’ll want to replicate at home—barbecue-style spelt pizza with caramelized onions and tempeh bacon. These delightful tiny pizzas were packed with flavor, and would make great afternoon snacks.
A big thank you to Veg News for having the sisters up for the weekend to enjoy some savory appetizers and champagne with the locals of San Francisco.
