On November 4th and 5th at the Bell House in Gowanus, Wasabassco Burlesque will present their Seventh Anniversary Extravaganza.
The man at the helm, Doc Wasabassco started the troupe seven years ago: “I was working as a cartoonist and illustrator, specializing in pin-up art. I had a small gallery show coming up and my best friend, who was a publicist, suggested we put on a burlesque show as a PR stunt to promote the gallery show. We secured a venue and then went to see all of the burlesque shows in existence in New York at the time. We pulled together the best performers we found and that was the first Wasabassco Show.”
Wasabassco presents weekly “couple-friendly” burlesque every Wednesday at Affairé Bistro & Lounge in Manhattan, and monthly shows at City Winery in Manhattan, Union Hall in Park Slope, Brooklyn, and The Way Station in Prospect Heights Brooklyn, as well as recurring shows and holiday events at The Bell House in Brooklyn. Wasabassco has also appeared throughout NYC and Brooklyn at Corio, The Delancey, The Dog House, Element, Galapagos Art Space, Irondale, The Kraine Theater, Living Room Lounge, Museum Of Sex, NoCa, Northsix, Public Assembly, The New Roadhouse, Sputnik, Southpaw, Studio B, and Tainted Lady Lounge, and at Acoustic Café in Bridgeport, CT, Asbury Lanes (Asbury Park, NJ), Creative Alliance at the Patterson Theater, Ottobar (Baltimore, MD), The Haunt (Ithaca, NY) and The Palace Of Wonders (Washington DC). The WB audience is made up of sophisticated, urban 20-to-40-somethings (though everyone over 21 is welcome), both male and female. Burlesque fans are interested in the irreverently smart, fun and upscale, with a little sex appeal to boot.
Says Doc: “We had so much fun doing that first show, and since it was such a big success, the gallery show ended up being an afterthought. The night after the burlesque show we hung the art while nursing severe hangovers, stuck round for about an hour at the opening, and then went home. From then on burlesque was my focus and I haven’t looked back”.
Friday’s show will include a stocking fashion show from PEEK Brooklyn featuring the ladies of Wasabassco, a pole dance show-within-a-show in the Frontier Room sponsored by X-Pole, and an exclusive engagement by Chicago’s Michelle L’Amour, The Most Naked Woman, who will bring her unique and scintillating brand of knock-down drag-out beauty to Brooklyn. Saturday night features a tattoo-art runway walk of performers deliciously inked by Scarlet Sinclair of Tattoo Ritual and a special appearance by the Outer Borough Brass Band. Both nights are gala events bringing Brooklyn the finest in variety and striptease, from classic go-go entertainment to the best of neo-burlesque, from hula hooping to fire eating.
