Below is my SEC Examiner Top 25, SEC and best of the rest predictions for Week 3 of the college football season. Be sure to subscribe to the free email alerts for new articles on the main page.
The favorites are noted to the right in parenthesis. If no spread is listed then there is no line on the game for any number of reasons.
My game predictions are straight-up and not based on the point spread. The spread, from VegasInsider, is only noted to determine who is the favorite in the game, and for some limited perspective. The spread determines which games classify as an upset in my upset picks.

Week 3 – Upsets of the Week
Auburn over Clemson
Coaching: Check, Auburn
Close Game Execution: Check, Auburn
Trust Factor: Check, Auburn
Those three things over-ride the revenge and home field factors. I like Auburn.
West Virginia over Maryland
I’m surprised that the horribly-dressed Terrapins team is a favorite over WVU. This is an overreaction to the week one impressive win over Miami. West Virginia’s offense will cause Maryland’s defense problems. I like the Mountaineers.
Ohio State over Miami
This is another overreaction favorite towards the Hurricanes. Anti-OSU sentiment contributes to it as well. Miami was feisty in close loss to Maryland. The Buckeyes have more talent than Miami. Miami has speed and raw ability but it will take a while for Al Golden to get the Hurricanes to play as smart as he wants, if he’s even around long enough for that. I expect Ohio State to bounce back from a rough performance against Toledo and show OSU is better than that.
Florida State over Oklahoma
We haven’t been able to learn much about either team entering this epic clash. Is FSU ready for a return to big-time status in college football? I think the answer rests on the shoulder pads of quarterback E.J. Manual. Indications are that he’s progressed and can seize the moment, but he has to pass this ultimate test. Oklahoma has so many offensive weapons to deal with. However, I think Florida State’s pass rush can disrupt the timing of the Sooners passing game. I expect one or two non-offensive touchdowns from FSU to put them over the top. I believe in Jimbo Fisher and his staff that the Seminoles team is ready to get this epic win, especially at home.
The rest of my predictions are the favorites in the games listed on the schedule above. I don’t pick games involving FCS schools. I’m not trying to pad my stats.
