As the nation mourns on the 10th Anniversary of what has become the worst attack on American soil, killing thousands of citizens based on foreign terrorists and their extreme views; Baltimore voters should recognize in such remembrance how important a strong local government is to handle such adversities?
In a City that has problems that are slowing adding to the decay and eventual demise of its citizenry, candidates with new and innovative ideas on how to bring Baltimore back-to-life, should trump certain incumbents who have become lackadaisical and arrogant in their service to those who expect a lot more from their elected leaders. Many have come to expect re-election, so much so that they only service citizens who they can consistently rely on their votes and developers/businesses they can count on thousands of dollars to infuse their campaigns. This type of selective service to people who on many accounts aren’t even a constituent of that official, should be abolished through high voter turnout and relentless outrage by those who have been castrated and taken for granted for way too long!
When you have leaders who only serve those who agree with and/or support their candidacy, while negating the other naysayers by avoiding debates, forums and other forms of voter educational analysis; these individuals need to be sent a message that ‘they are merely public servants’ hired by the real bosses – the Baltimore City citizenry! When individuals take for granted the intelligence of their electorate, lying about their residency and other issues, only to be revealed through various investigative journalists and their reports; these folk need to learn that their lack of honesty in such a trivial matter only means we cannot trust them on larger matters of extreme importance! These types of servants would never be allowed another term if they were elected to districts and jurisdictions where the electorate and citizenry actually cared about themselves, as well as their families, communities and neighborhoods; therefore why allow Baltimore to continue to be the political laughing stock of this state – and country?
Therefore, on this day of remembrance, realize and remember the lack of service you’ve received over the past four years, or eighteen months; dissect the candidates vying to represent YOUR interests and consider giving them a chance at a term of two in representing the quality of life that YOU deserve! When individuals have been elected for as long as some have been alive who are over the age of 30, there is certainly something wrong with the electorate who believe that NO ONE else can serve their district, except this individual who has obviously incurred so much political baggage that they cannot possibly service the actual residents of such district? This 9/11, use it as a 9-1-1 call to action for this Tuesday’s Primary Election in Baltimore; wake-up and realize that while we were openly attacked publicly on American soil a decade ago, we continue to be attacked subliminally with some of these individuals who have held office for decades, while NOTHING has changed – at least for the betterment of Baltimore!
The following 9/11 (9-council districts out of 11-races) breakdown below is merely MY take on some races that can be effected on Election Day – for the betterment of Baltimore!
2nd District– After this district has recently been vacated by longtime politico Nicholas D’Adamo, the person sure to bring this district to prominence is none other than 27-year old Brandon Scott! He’s been hands down the choice of most, yet while that usually makes some wonder, this guy is the real thing ready to serve the constituents of this South East Baltimore district!
4th District– The difference between the challenger and the freshman Councilman looking to be re-elected for his 2nd term is BIG; yet while the challenger served as a Delegate however no longer holds this seat and now vies for a council seat doesn’t make sense and this district would be served well in continuing with the leadership brought forth by Bill Henry!
5th District– This district is served by a woman who has been in the council longer than any current elected official statewide has served – PERIOD! Selected to fill her husband’s position in 1977, Rikki Spector should NOT be allowed to service a community she makes no bones about NOT living in the district any longer! Whoever the district would choose would be best for the district!
6th District– Another freshman legislator, Sharon Green-Middleton has worked tirelessly for this district and have yet to find even a handful of detractors of what she’s done wrong? Therefore, recognizing and re-electing the continuous of such leadership is certainly as important as realizing those who have to go – Sharon does NOT!
7th District– In a district where the councilwoman has serviced her community better than most council persons citywide, it still begs the question as to how this council district trusts someone who obviously fibbed about where they live at – and then sued a fellow Examiner colleague when they exposed such fib. With that said, a newcomer to the district based on redistricting certainly can best represent the district for some time; and actually does live in the district! Nick Mosby is the district’s best chance at great, un-bossed and un-bought leadership for some time to come!
8th District– Is currently represented by a woman who was convicted of a crime while in office – enough said! David Maurice Smallwood has certainly represented this district well as a community activist and former challenger of Holton’s! While Dayvon Love is young great leadership that both should watch for in the future, this year’s election belongs to Smallwood – NO DOUBT!
9th District– From a retired councilwoman, to the possibility of her gun-toting and belligerent son; along with a ‘Teach for America’ white candidate that wants to represent the 90% African American district; this district should belong to the longtime public servant known as Michael Eugene Johnson! The guy who has worked in different city agencies improving this City, while being the second (runner-up) to Madame Agnes Welch in the last election, Johnson deserves such representation!
12th District– While the longtime councilman Bernard ‘Jack’ Young finally elevated to the Council President’s Office, this district would in most cases be a toss-up. However, when the leading candidate who has been endorsed by multiple local and state elected officials, along with receiving the endorsement of every major print news outlet (Sun, Examiner, City Paper and the Afro); there is NO DOUBT as to who should be elected here! Odette Ramos, will be the City’s first ever elected Latina to office, which should make this very diverse city proud – yet shameful it took this long?!
13th District – While the service of Warren Branch hasn’t been bad, just plain non-existent, that lapse of service should excite the district to come out and vote for one of the three great candidates vying for the seat. Shannon Sneed, the soft-spoken, PTA type former WJZ-Tv13 employee is the front-runner, however the district would NOT be served badly by Kimberly Armstrong or Antonio Glover either!
The other two districts of the eleven have no challengers, however Councilman William ‘Bill’ Cole, as well as Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke are well deserving of their seat and is fitting not to have any challengers!
