For the longest time it was a mock joke by free market supporters that moderates and some liberals scoffed at.
If the government can tell Americans how much food they can eat and how much energy they can consume, and if the government can use absurd logic and false science to justify these dictatorial interventions into the lives of its citizens, than surely there will come a day when the government regulates cell phones under the preposterous guise that cell phones cause cancer.
Well, thanks to the same left wing tyrants that thought it was a good idea to ban flush toilets, that day has arrived:
San Francisco is leading the way for questionable cell phone regulations that will cause a cost and a headache for retailers around the city.
The first ever cell phone radiation law recently took effect, and now the city is being sued on First Amendment grounds.
The main problem? The medical risks associated with cell phone radiation are merely theories at this point. In reality, they’ve only been classified as a “possible risk” by the World Health Organization (WHO). According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), studies “have not shown a consistent link between cell phone use and cancers of the brain, nerves, or other tissues of the head or neck.” But regulation-happy Mayor Gavin Newsom doesn’t seem to care much about the facts.
It’s quite fitting that two short months before San Francisco paved the road for the destruction of one of the only markets that’s been booming over the last five years (IE, the cell phone market), there was a shocking study published in an otherwise prestigious academic journal with findings which all but scream for a totalitarian solution to a phony problem:
“Solid waste combustion, sewage treatment, stone quarrying, marinas, and oil and coal-fired power plants have air pollution damages larger than their value added. The largest industrial contributor to external costs is coal-fired electric generation, whose damages range from 0.8 to 5.6 times value added.”
Yes ladies and gentleman of Detroit, those boats that you love to take out to Lake St. Clair in order to enjoy a beautiful summer day with the family are destructive to the environment and must be banned!
Oh, and you can forget the fact that coal has been one of the largest suppliers of electricity to Detroiters and all Americans over the last century. Coal must be banned as well; the hell with the scientific and economic facts!
To answer the headline question: what cell phones, marinas and coal all have in common is that Progressives desperately want the government to regulate them to death.
They want the government to do this despite the fact that industrialized, modernized, advanced nations which have historically made use of “solid waste combustion, sewage treatment, stone quarrying, marinas, and oil and coal-fired power plants” also have the cleanest environments.
The regulatory war on things we take for granted such as cell phones, marinas and coal should have freedom-loving Americans quivering in fear over what our oppressive government “leaders” have in store.
