A Christian who is very worried about my immortal soul, gave me some Bible verses to read. She is worried about my soul since she assumes that I have one, along with everyone else (she thinks) in the world. The question in her mind is where these people – including me – are going to go when we die.
Personally, I am going to a medical school (where I taught human anatomy many years ago) to be converted into a cadaver or articulated skeleton for medical school teaching. It is a worthwhile way to give back to society.
But this lady gave me some biblical verses to read. These include I Timothy 6:3 – 5, II Timothy 2:14, 16 and 23, and Galatians 3:1 – 14. You can look them up, but they deal with arguing about religion, debating about religion, false doctrines, listening to God, quarreling, etc.
I am glad that she sent me these verses, since they apply so well to her and her adamant, intolerant attitude towards anyone who does not think exactly as she does. She should read these verses and heed them.
These verses apply to being educated about the Bible, the literal translation, the Word of God, etc. And that involves study as Biblical scholars are doing and have done and their works and study results in books that are extra-Biblical.
This Christian would not agree to any extra-biblical account of anything, and would only believe a literal interpretation of the Bible. If the Bible says that the mathematical constant pi is 3.00, then it is 3.00, not the 3.1416 that mathematicians have calculated.
If a rabbit is a ruminant, as says the Bible, then it is a ruminant (cow-like digestive system) not like a rabbit. If insects have four legs in the Bible, then they have four legs, not the six that we know of insects. If the Bible says that bats are birds, then they must be birds, not the mammals that they really are.
Since she lacks any sort of examination of the world or science beyond what the Bible says, you will not be surprised that she does not agree with any part of Charlie Darwin’s theorem of evolution, not does she believe that the strong overwhelming scientific evidence of global warming is true in any way.
The sad thing about this is that this Christian stays willfully ignorant. Ignorance as we all know is far different from stupidity. Stupidity is the inability to comprehend things, to think, to reason and learn. Ignorance is a lack of knowledge.
That lack of knowledge for any of us can be made up with education in a particular field of knowledge, with study, with building up information little by little in the way that you would study history or mathematics.
That this Christian is willfully ignorant is only a further example of how uninterested she is with any semblance of truth or other values and thoughts in the religious field, and perhaps how brainwashed she was and continues to be by others who are also willfully ignorant.
