WHAT IS MINISTRY?
By Linda C Tardy
First, it is impossible to talk about ministry without including the Creator, who created ministry. Ministry is the heart of God. God is love, love is God, and God loves people. He loves his creation. It is the Spirit of the Lord that allows us to nurture the needs of others. Ministry is loving people. Before we can love another person, we must know our role and position in Christ. What is our role and position in Christ? Our role is to be Ministers of Reconciliation, reconciling the lost to Christ. Our position is to represent God through serving him, and the needs of others.
Ministry is to foster hope and healing to the nations where God sends us. People all over the world are in need of some kind of help. Therefore, God has chosen us to be his hands and feet. As ministers we are to reach out to people who are hospitalized with multiple illness, such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, kidney failure, those who are hungry, thirsty, and in need of clothing and shelter. We are to extend our hand to the unbelievers, and witness to them, the word of truth. As ministers we are called by God himself, to be priests, and show those who are lost the way to the light, which is Jesus Christ. When we get involved in fundraisers to cure the sick, we are ministering, doing the work of God.
God has given each of us gifts and talents, to be used to his glory. We are to use our gifts to help each other. You may be a teacher, who can teach someone about Christ. You may have the gift of healing, to heal someone of sickness. You may have a talent to write, to help someone who is emotionally distressed, but through your words of encouragement you can give them peace.
Ministry is the authority given to us by God. Jesus could not begin his ministry without authority from God, who is in control of heaven and this earth. We were created for ministry. We are to do the work of God in this earth realm, through the power of the Holy Spirit, bringing him glory through the gifts that he has administered to us. We are to go and teach others what God has authorized us to do.
Ministry is the mind of Christ. Throughout the ministry of Jesus, he taught others to be like him. Therefore, we are little Jesus’ walking the earth teaching others the ministry of Jesus Christ. All of our gifts are necessary. Therefore, ministry is building up the body of Christ with our different gifts so that we all can come together as one in Christ.
Since ministry is the highest calling of God, we are held accountable to God. As servants for Christ, we have a responsibility to carry out the “Plan of Salvation,” to those who are unsaved. God has called many of us, but there are only a few who will accept his calling. God tells us that those who do the Lords work will receive an inheritance from the Lord, which is God’s reward for his people.
I AM A MINISTER OF JESUS CHRIST
