It’s supposed to be a gorgeous weekend across Central Iowa, so it’s a great weekend to get outside and finish up some of those winterizing tasks that need to be done. There’s also the ISU vs Texas matchup in Ames on Saturday.
But if you’re like me and none of that appeals to you, there’s always something new at the movie theater. This week, four new releases are available for wide-release in our area and across the nations.
50/50 (Rated R) – Inspired by a true story, this comedy focuses on a young man in his mid-twenties who learns that he has cancer and has a 50/50 chance to survive. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the young man and Seth Rogan as his brother, this is the movie I’m most looking forward to seeing. My wife is a breast-cancer survivor, so I’m curious to see how this is portrayed. The film looks amazing, and it’s the one I’m most looking forward to this weekend.
Courageous (Rated PG-13) – Four police officers struggle with the boundaries between work and home, especially after a tragedy strikes. This film comes from Sherwood Pictures, a small production company run out the Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia. This will be the fourth film for Sherwood, a studio that has had an impressive run since it’s first film, Flywheel. Their second movie, Facing the Giants was made for $100,000 and went on to make more than $10 million. Their last movie, 2008’s Fireproof, was made for $500,000 and went to gross more than $33 million. It also opened in 4th place its opening weekend. Courageous reportedly has a budget of more than $1 million (still a paltry sum by Hollywood standards), but it’s the largest budge for Sherwood. The Duggars from TLC’s “19 Kids and Counting” make cameo appearances in the film.
Dream House (Rated PG-13) – After moving into a new home, a family discovers the previous residents were the victims of a brutal crime. Starring Daniel Craig, Naomi Watts and Rachel Weisz, if this one is as creepy as the trailer, it should be an effective thriller.
What’s Your Number? (Rated R) – Anna Faris and Chris Evans star in this romantic comedy about a woman is going back through her old lovers to see if she missed Mr. Right. The previews make this look like your standard romantic-comedy, however, Faris can be really funny, so it might prove to be better than expected.
