Going to play billiards is like going on vacation. You want to make sure you pack all the necessities and favorite items you may use when you play pool. So what’s in your case?
Obviously a cue stick is a good start. If you are a new player you are building your repertoire and may or may not have your own cue. However, once you get one you will want to start learning with your own cue rather than using a house cue. It is much better quality and plays better.
Many amateur players will also have a breaking cue. When you start using more power behind your break and breaking harder, it is a good idea to use a separate cue with a harder tip. This will prevent cracking and popping the tip off. Instead of a single cue case, you will need one that holds at least two.
More experienced amateur players will have a multi-cue case that may hold a third cue and extra shafts. They may also have jump cues, masse cues or other specialty cues.
If you don’t like searching around the pool hall for a bridge or using house bridges, you may want a bridge head that attaches to the end of an extra cue or house cue if you do not have a second cue.
A chalk holder and extra pieces of a chalk may be in your case. Sometimes the pool hall chalks get worn down so much the divot in the middle makes it more difficult to chalk a cue properly.
If your hand gets sweaty or sticky from humidity, you may want a glove or some powder handy. This will help your hand slide better when you hold your cue and avoid resistance when trying to take a shot.
A towel to clean off or wipe down your shaft periodically will help remove chalk dust.
If you are an eight ball player, some leagues require you mark the pocket when shooting the eight ball. Bring your own pocket marker, especially if you have a lucky, favorite item or figurine.
These are some things you want to bring when you play. You may want to add or subtract things based on personal preference. Either way, make sure you come prepared with your own selection of necessary items. Most importantly, be ready to have fun and play some pool.
