Metro Atlanta made headlines once again, only this time it wasn’t good news. In a report from the AJC highlighting recently released statistics by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Metro Atlanta landed the nation’s top spot for job losses. It is no surprise that many of these lost jobs have come from the housing and construction markets, and Gwinnett has been hit very hard. However, the losses have also extended to the financial and government job areas. Additionally, white collar professional type services have provided very few new opportunities.
Look around Gwinnett, and you’ll see evidence of this in plain sight. Foreclosed and vacant homes, empty storefronts and office space and barren shelves at the food pantries tell a somber story. Looking at the struggles facing Gwinnett, one would think that hope is lost. Well, it is not. Gwinnett has been driven by tough, hardworking entrepreneurial people for many, many decades. That will not stop now. Investments in education and infrastructure such as the recent dedication of the Life Science building at Gwinnett Tech, the opening of the McGinnis Ferry road extension and the upcoming improvements to Hwy 316 will hopefully create a better climate and greater opportunity to help Gwinnett change with the times. In times of struggle like this, new ideas, opportunities, products and business will usually come. The people of Gwinnett have what it takes to step out of routine thoughts and ideas, to look ahead and bring new jobs and industry to this community.
Let’s face it; jobs and income are the greatest obstacles most Gwinnett citizens face today. Once a healthy job market is returned to Gwinnett, the empty homes, stores and shelves will return to being viable pieces of the community.
So, how has the job market in Gwinnett and Metro Atlanta impacted you? What changes have you made to make ends meet? Have you been forced to change your career field? If so, has this change been positive? How did you do it? Maybe your ideas and experience can help another who is looking for a new path.
