Thursday night, the Project Runway finale aired on Lifetime (channel 24 on Cox in Scottsdale), and it was time for the final four designers to present their collections. After receiving valuable feedback from the judges on their mini-collections, each of the four had a great deal of work to do before the final runway show. Viktor Luna, Joshua McKinley, Kimberly Goldson adn Anya Ayoung-Chee were all aiming for the win, but only one would walk away with the title.
The final designers were given an opportunity to shop at Mood for additional materials, and had $500 to spend. As they worked, Tim Gunn consulted with each of them, and Joshua came under fire once again for his choices. Afterward he said, “The critique with Tim has had my mind spinning for hours.” Each of the designers revised the three looks they had already presented, and Anya made extensive revisions to her entire collection. Of course Anya scrambled right up until the last minute, and then the designers showcased their pieces. Anya’s pieces reflected her Caribbean ties with flowing chic pieces, Viktor combined his love of the city with his Mexican heritage, Joshua aimed to combine hard and soft lines while using pop prints and neon fabrics, and Kimberly focused on urban glam.
While Viktor had been pegged as the frontrunner much of the season, the judges were not won over by his final collection. The did not like his shear black outfits, which dominated his collection. The judges felt as if he essentially provided two different shows, and it just didn’t work. Michael Kors praised Joshua’s tailoring, but his overall vision fell flat. Nina Garcia did feel that he was the most improved of the group though. Kimberly’s designs got great reviews, and the judges liked that she truly incorporated the constructive criticism they had provided. However, Nina Garcia felt that Goldson just wasn’t quite there yet. That left Anya, and the judges liked her bold prints and flowy, bohemian pieces.
Kimberly was eliminated first, then the judges narrowed it down to Joshua McKinley and Anya Ayoung-Chee as the final two. The Season 9 Project Runway winner is Anya Ayoung-Chee. The Project Runway Fan Favorite title went to Anya as well, even though Anthony Ryan had been in the lead not long before voting closed. The choice of Anya as the winner has many fans in an uproar, who seem split over Joshua and Viktor as the designers they think deserved the win. What do you think of the judge’s decision this season? Will you be tuning in to Project Runway All-Stars when it premieres in 2012? Stay tuned for a premiere date, which has been moved out from November 3. Project Runway airs Thursday nights on Lifetime, channel 24 on Cox in Scottsdale.
