Penalties are the story Thursday as the Minnesota Wild lost to the Anaheim Ducks Thursday at Xcel Energy Center.
The Wild and Ducks combined to score four power play goals.
Neither team has been that good this season with the man advantage.
The Ducks rank 20th in the league scoring on 14.6 percent of its opportunities. The Wild are right behind them at 22nd (13.9 percent).
The Ducks (5-3-1) were successful for two reasons according to Yeo.
“First, they found ways to get pucks into the blue paint (the crease),” he said. “Second, they do not have one guy in there. They have two or three.”
Yeo said after the game that he believes the Wild deserved to win and outplayed the Ducks for most of it.
“We need to have a belief,” he added. “We don’t have a feeling right now that it is going to come.”
The two most important penalties in the game came in the final five minutes committed by the Wild.
The Wild (3-3-3) were able to kill them off, but spent four of the final four minutes and 52 seconds shorthanded. When the final penalty ended with 45 second remaining, the Wild was able to create a scoring chance or two, but just did not have enough time to make Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller or the Ducks uncomfortable.
The Wild got power play goals from Jared Spurgeon, his first of the season, on a big rebound and Matt Cullen, his team-leading fourth of the season, on a redirection of a Mikko Koivu shot under Hiller.
Niklas Backstrom stopped on 13 of 16 shots, but had absolutely no chance on all three Duck goals.
No. 3 – Corey Perry. The Ducks forward recorded a goal and an assist.
No. 2 – Ryan Getzlaf. The Ducks forward recorded a goal and an assist. He had the game-winning goal.
No. 1 – Teemu Selanne. The Ducks forward assisted on all three goals.
