Every Wednesday you will find me, Arleana Waller, your committed Bakersfield Neighborhood Examiner, getting over hump day at a local restaurant, looking to be wowzereekered, by the food, service, atmosphere, something, anything; and of course reporting back to you.
This Wednesday, my prego sister joined me for lunch at CPK to be wowzereekered.
FOOD:The lunch portions are just the right amount
DÉCOR:The black and yellow is refreshing
COST: great lunch budget, more expensive at dinner
LOCATION:10150 Stockdale Highway
CUISINE:Man finger food
DID THEY WOW ME: Yes
I know it’s a chain but, I love chains, they have perfected the art and it pleases my tummy. CPK do a good job of serving food that doesn’t scream chain. It’s delicious and they have great ingredients that make the food feel more organically prepared. What I really liked today when I walked in was the customer service. Our waitress was spot on in every aspect, you all know I am the Queen of Customer service, so give it to me straight and it really pleases me.
California Pizza Kitchen is in a nice part of town, clean, spacious, open, fountain outside, friendly service with great comfort food. You now have to ask for the bread, which use to be automatic. Their menu provides a lot of distinctive and innovative flavors for their pizzas. If you are not a pizza fan, don’t wrinkle your cute little forehead, the salads are a sure pleasure. And if you are an individual who eats gluten free foods, CPK has a variety of gluten free options.
This CPK has it down pack. The customer service is Queen. The restaurant was relatively busy and the waitress was attentive. Which is why we pay the extra cost and tip, we want attention. Our waitress did not disappoint.
The restaurant had a nice urban feel to it, great atmosphere, plenty of nice size tables and plenty of space.
They have so many new items on the menu, like crispy mac n cheese, which is mac n cheese fried, interesting, the dynamite shrimp and the caramelized peach salad can’t wait to try them. But we ordered enough for an army. We were so hungry that we ordered basically everything on the menu, well not everything, but here is our order and my personal review.
Avocado Club Egg Rolls – I love California Avocados, they make everything taste better, but rolled up with chicken, tomato, Monterey Jack cheese and apple wood smoked bacon in a crispy wonton roll makes these Avocado rolls a deal sealer. Make sure to dip them in the ranchito sauce.
Lettuce Wraps – A traditional dish, but CPK minced chicken wok-seared with Shiitake mushrooms, water chestnuts and scallions, but I like to pick all my scallions off, is really a perfect dish by itself, if your eating light, especially when you pour some of the spicy soy-ginger sauce on top. It’s a perfect balance of everything, but light enough to keep you perky
Spinach Artichoke Dip – Exactly what is says it’s served hot with light crispy tortilla chips. I’ve had my share of spinach dip, but CPK has great chunks of artichoke with the perfect amount of cheesy spinach, a great intro to any meal.
The Original BBQ Chicken Chopped – I love this salad, a real California dish, it has Sweet corn, black beans, jicama, cilantro, basil, tortilla strips and Monterey Jack tossed in herb ranch dressing. All the flavors are dancing in your mouth, deliciously refreshing, the salad is topped with BBQ chicken, tomatoes and scallions, but I held the scallions and BBQ sauce. Just on e salad bursting with pleasing flavors. If you’re an avocado lover to request extra avocados and cilantro.
CPK Chopped Salad – My prego sister didn’t leave a bite behind, but I had to taste it, the apple wood smoked bacon flavor wasn’t overpowering, and of course I’m pleased with the avocados, chicken, tomatoes, chopped egg, basil and Gorgonzola with blue cheese dressing, which taste very home-style or organic, it was nice chinks of blue cheese, she also added Beets which totally put this salad almost at the top of my salad list.
California Club Pizza –What a refreshing twist on what we think about when we think of pizza. This pizza had apple wood smoked bacon, chicken and Mozzarella, with tomatoes, avocado, yes more, and chilled lettuce tossed in a mayonnaise sauce. It’s like eating your pizza and salad together. The flavors complimented each other and not one over powered the other.
The Original BBQ Chicken – The pizza was invented in 1985; I think this is the pizza that put them on the map. I love the fact that their dish names explain themselves, no real guessing. This pizza has BBQ sauce, smoked Gouda, Mozzarella, BBQ chicken, red onions and cilantro. I like to eliminate the red onions, add tons of extra cilantro, with extra BBQ sauce on the side. This is a great treat for any age. It’s a comfort food you won’t soon forget.
Chicken Tequila Pasta – The Spinach fettuccine with chicken, bell peppers, and cilantro in tequila-lime jalapeño cream sauce is totally wowzereekeredly delicious. I could eat tons of this stuff, if it would promise not to sit on my gut. It is a rich dish, but again, perfectly balanced with the flavors complimenting each other. They have the perfect amount of sauce, the chicken was a little hard, but I just pushed it aside and ate the pasta, with a request for extra cilantro.
We opted for the Apple Crisp its slow-baked Granny Smith apples with a brown sugar and butter topping, OMG, if ever eating a food could bring you such pleasure, this is the dish, it’s served warm, you can add caramel sauce or Häagen-Dazs, but I like it fine without the trimming. It is very buttery and comforting and pleasing.
Of course my Ice Tea and Water.
I had a lot of food to take home with my, but I’m sure tomorrow, I will be happy I ordered so much food.
